Tarifa to Tangiers for the day

Hi

I have a couple of questions!! (to say the least)!!

We are visiting Gibraltar next week and are thinking about driving to Tarifa and taking the ferry to Tangiers for a few hours.

We do not want to do an organised tour (dont want to be taken to a herbalist or carpet factory).

Can we walk from the port to the centre of Tangiers? If so how much hassle will we get. We are in our fourties and obvious tourists!

Is there a way to avoid the tour guide touts? How persistant are they?

Also once in the centre do people stop you on the street to sell you something?

We are not snobs by any means, and if there for a weeks holiday no amount of hassle would bother us at all, in fact it adds to the cultural experience, but we are on a tight schedule on this short break and need to get about at our own pace ((fast!). Is this possible?

It would be such a shame to get so close to a different continent and not get a small taster.

Also can we use euros for a small souvenier and for a coffee or a beer?

Irealise so many questions, any advise will be greatfully recieved!!!

Thank you all in advance

Lynne

I appreciate your suggestions. How did you find your guide? What tour company is he with? We are thinking to go to Morocco in June and appreciate any information. Thanks.

Hello caak48.

No suggestions for you at this point, as we're doing this trip at the end of Sept, but we've opted to stay overnight to be able to see a bit more and explore Tangier. If you're going before then, please let me know what your experience was and if YOU have any pointers to share. Cheers!

We are going for an over night trip in April 2015. Do you "Davidstandard" or "caak48" have any suggestions since you were there the most recent. Did you get a guide? Please let me know any helpful tips you can. Thank you. Favorite places you visited? Good/safe restaurant? Did you exchange your money at the port?

Hi our family of four, not sure if anyone of them can reply unless if they saw the post, otherwise send them a PM, and get the tips about the things you want to know.

otherwise, Tangier has a page on Tripadvisor, so no need to a local guide as it's not difficult to wander around if you got from Tarifa to Tangier, your ferry will be arriving around 9am, which means you have a full day to enjoy and walk around, as you can get into the Kasbah of old Tangier just in front of the Port as it's a walkable distance.

so for Restaurants, places to go, are listed on trip advisor at the following link here you can read reviews about anything attract your eyes, then send PM to the reviewers to give you answers and updates about anything interests you : www.tripadvisor.com/Search…

In Tangier you can take a petit taxi to go from place to another, check more updates about it on the right side of this forum, under the top asked questions.

Hope this can answer your questions.

Dead easy to find the medina and walk around it.

Do expect the level of hassle to be rather higher than in Tunisia, perhaps considerably so.

This day trip to Tangier is not good idea, a taste of African continent will be like landing in the land of barbarians at Tanger city port, first you get the taxi touts, then false guide ones then miscellaneous ones. ( not always in this order of presentation) You must change money into dirhams at banks near the ferry terminal, beware of snatch guys, then you must escape by taxi to city centre, don't try to make him use the meter, you will receive his bad face and you will be stressed. Maybe you can walk but is all up steep hills to city centre, Avenue Pasteur, false guides will stick like glue, more stress. At Pasteur you get small break but you have been spotted by big-league touts who now take over sophisticated scams. I promise at the end of the day you will wish you had stayed in civilised Gibraltar.

There will be many more scammers to meet during your day, list is endless, I leave you to find them yourselfs

The Tangier tourist office is at 29 Avenue Pasteur, tel +212 3999 48050 they can arrange for an official guide to meet you at Tangier city ferry terminal, he or she will keep the 'circus' of false guides and rip-off taxi drivers at bay, you can also send an enquiry email to the tourist office at Rabat for further information.
