Tour to Tangier from Malaga

What is a good one-day tour from Malaga to Tangier for 4 people? Would rather not be on a big bus that just does the "tourist stops". Say a post about the tour guide Said but can't find any way to contact him nor any idea of the price.

You need to Google "Southern Spain day trips to Tangier". Several companies offer day trips from the Costa del Sol. The whole round trip takes around 13 hours. Probably though this is exactly what you don't want (on and off a big bus …)

Your alternative is to get yourself from Malaga to Tarifa, by hire car or bus (change in Algeciras). If you are in a hire car you can park at the port in the morning and return to your car in the evening for the return drive to Malaga. From Tarifa the fast ferry goes to Tangier town. If travelling by car, go directly to Tarifa and buy your ticket at the port. If travelling by bus, go to the port in Algeciras and buy a ticket Tarifa/Tangier town/Tarifa and then take the free bus from just outside the port booking office all the way to Tarifa. There is of course a return bus to Algeciras from Tarifa on the return journey.

If you want to find a private guide, again I would suggest you Google "Private Tour Guides Tangier", and a whole load of names come up, including that of Said, complete with all contact details. You can then ask them what the cost is, although I read somewhere that the going rate a couple of years ago was around €100 per person for the day including guide and I believe transport, but I do not know if it was meant to include anything else.

Remember when working out your timings that normally Morocco is one hour behind Spain, except during the month of Ramadan (June 29th to around July 29th this year), when the time difference is two hours.

I am sorry I cannot be more specific. Perhaps someone who has recent experience of such a trip would be kind enough to post their experience and recommendations.

You're looking at 2 hours each way on a tour bus to Tarifa, probably 0.5 to 1 hour waiting for ferries to depart, 1 hour each way for the ferry and police controls, so that's maybe 8 hours of your day spoken for. You need to find out just how much time you would have in Tanger and that will tell you whether it's worth it.

But I have to say that many people who visit Morocco this way tend to be unprepared for the bad points and aren't in the country long enough to appreciate the good points.

Tim, I totally agree. It would be a much better idea to stay overnight in Tangier and return to Tarifa the following afternoon. That would make for a much more pleasant trip all round.

REMEMBER though that only certain specified countries' citizens are exempt from a visa to enter Morocco from Spain. We are South African and we made the mistake of going all the way to the Embassy in Algeciras just to be told that, if we don't have Spanish residency (even though we had a valid Schengen which allowed us into the British part of Gibraltar) it is not the case with Morocco. Apparently the visa has to be issued by the Moroccan Embassy in your country of origin BEFORE you leave for Spain. We were, to say the least, very disappointed in this state of affairs!
