family holiday october

Hi all,

My husband, 7 year old son and I are going to South Africa mid October for 12 nights. As he is an only child we are looking for advice on good places to stay for kids activities ect along the Garden Route. Also what about kids on Safari_ is it too long for them ?

We also plan to stay in Hermanus - any reccomended self catering appartments?

Thanks a mill

Your son might be perfect for the Garden Route Game Lodge experience. It's an inexpensive way for him to see wildlife, enjoy the playgrounds, not get too tired.

www.grgamelodge.co.za/english/index_flash.jsp (You will enjoy the food.. it is an unexpected bonus). Botlierskop, near Mossel Bay, is also a good bet, where you could all sleep in a luxury tent! http://www.botlierskop.co.za/

In Cape Town, he is certainly old enough to be amazed at the Aquarium, which is at the V&A Waterfront. Best self-catering apartments in Hermanus are the Marine Square accommodations - http://www.marinesquare.co.za/. Also you could check out Harbour House - http://www.harbourhouse-hermanus.co.za/ Both are right in town, walk to everything. And here are a few dozen more: safarinow.com/destinations/hermanus/self-cat… Across the bay in De Kelders is this:http://www.whalecove.co.za/ Watch the whales from your terrace, along with some memorable sunsets.

Things to do on the garden route, my daughter was about 7 when she did the Mossel Bay bridge swing, attached to me of course. The beaches are lovely Vic Bay, Buffels bay, Heralds Bay. Georges farming community have strawberry picking (seasonal), a cheese making factory, you can visit the beautiful transport museum and have pancakes in an old train, go up the Outeniqua in a tram and picnic up at the top.

Oudtshoorn Ostrich farms, Oudtshoorn museum, Cango Caves, Cango Safari Park (cheetah sanctuary) etc.

Boat ride to the other side of the Knysna Heads and take a walking trail.

So much to see and do on the Garden Route.
