Where to go with young child end of Oct/ beginning November

hi all, we are planning a 2 week holiday late Oct/beginning of November. We're looking for good locations in South Africa to stay. Our son is 2 yrs old. We would like to stay at approx. 2 locations. We are looking for warm weather (at least 24 degrees C) and not much wind. In terms of accomodation we are thinking about an hotel, appartment or resort. We love nature, good food & wine, hiking, but also just relaxing at the pool or beach. Please advise, thanks!

Look at 2 regions, The Cape and Cape Town and Kwazulu Natal for beach and the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains for hiking, walking trails, bushman rock paintings, ect. and midlands meander.

Loesch, I would say Kwazulu-Natal is your best bet. There are a number of fantastic child-friendly resorts, a selection of game reserves in the north of the province, lots of great beaches, and plenty to see and do (for example Ushaka Marine World in Durban). It is malaria free and the temperature will be nice and warm, including the sea water for swimming.

Cape Town is also nice but can be a lot more windy, and the sea is freezing cold.

I would also suggest to go to the coast with a small child as the weather in Oct/Nov can already be quite hot in the interior.

Hotels to consider would be the Umhlanga Rocks Southern Sun Hotels, The lifestyle Hotel, Beverly Hills, The Cabanas. The Umhlanga Sands, Breakers these are all good hotels on the main beach of Umhlanga. Another great family no frills hotel in a beautiful location for kids is the Salt Rock Hotel. Lots of accommodation options on the coast and you can go further up or down the Kzn coastline for some exquisite places such as San Lameer, St Michaels etc.

Drakensberg and midlands meander is also an amazing place to visit with lots of accommodation options depending on your budget, from self catering to exclusive hotels, Drakensberg Gardens, Cathedral Peak Hotel, Ant bear, Ardmore Guest Farm, Ashtonvale Guest Farm (this one is very basic but great for kids, see my blog on it before you consider it), The Cavern in the Northern Drakensberg. So many options in this region

Hello Loesch,

South of the Kruger park you have the Ngwenya resort. I was there with my 2 kids (just for lunch) and they have a lot of entertainment for children.

In October/November temperatures are 30 or higher here in the Kruger area.

Would recommend Salt Rock Hotel and Cathedral Peak Hotel. Salt Rock is very child friendly, on the beach, big lawns and a lovely pool area. Good food though not amazing. The beach has a tidal pool as well and there ae several good little beaches close by. Nice snorkelling in a tidal pool at Thompson's Bay. We had a great holiday there.

Cathedral Peak is awesome! It is the closest hotel to the actual Drakensberg range, set in a national park in the Little Berg. It is a family run hotel. It has a kids dining room?playroom with staff so you can have a romantic meal. There is a huge pool and also a smaller heated kids pool beside it. There is horse riding and also pony rides, minature golf, playground etc

There are some easy walks as well as strenuous hikes. The scenery is wow and the food is first class. We have been about 6 times an will keep going back.

You can google both hotels. Good Luck
