Safety on Roads

Hello

Would love to drive on the following two journeys. But just worried about the safety aspect (crime). Please advice.

Is it safe to drive from Johannesburg airport to Hazyview?

Is is safe to drive on Route 62 from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn?

Thanks.

define "safe"! what is "safe"?

what other people will probably tell is: try to avoid driving at night (and mind you, the sun sets quickly in ZA) and try to obey to traffic rules...there are lot of corrupt policemen out there trying to rip you off

Driving at night is never nice in an area you dont know. Your arrival will most probably be in the early morning and you need to calculate app. 4,5-5 hours max and therefore you will be driving in day light.

The drive is safe, all well maintained highway. You need app. R130.00 in cash for toll gates. Watch out for speed traps, can become expensive!

Use the correct side of the road which makes the left side the "right" side.

yesits safe, just have your wits about you and don't do anything silly like driving at night, running out of petrol, oil or water. Make sure the car is in good working order before you leave and don't pick anyone up on the way. All common sense stuff really but sometimes people lose their heads while travelling.

Have a great time

As safe as most roads are if you take care about how you are driving and keep an eye out for those that aren't! We drove from Hermanus to Oudtshoorn and it was a beautiful drive and much nicer (and safer) that some English roads.

Agree with all the others. No problems driving any of the routes you mention. Drivers are MUCH safer and more courteous than in Sri Lanka!

BTW Klaus - Sri Lanka like lots more of the world also drives on the left!

Driving in SA is a lot easier than in Sri Lanka, good roads and reasonably orderly drivers. I wouldn't see any problem at all driving in the day time.
