Travelling within southern Africa

Hello All

We are planning a trip to southern Africa in Feb/March of next year and are working on a complicated itinerary. We are hoping to spend some time with family in Pretoria, some time around Capetown and the winelands, want to visit Etosha and the dunes in Namibia, hope to spend time in the Okavango Delta, see Vic Falls and spend some time in Kruger Park. We did some of this trip 4 years ago but were flooded out of Namibia. We plan to take some short flights and rent a car when necessary. Any tips on crossing borders with a rented car? Can we drop a rental at a different point than the pick up without too many problems? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You must have a letter from your hire company. I am not sure you will be able to drop it off in a different country, but if you are thinking of picking it up in Cape Town and dropping it off in Johannesburg, that is fine, you will just be charged extra.

Not sure that February is the best time for the Delta. I think it is pretty dry then. But, prices are much lower.

Thanks

I know Feb/Mar is not great timing but it is the only time of year we have a block of time. We had no trouble last time crossing in and out of Namibia with a car rented in Capetown.

Lamlee is right. Most companies will allow cross border travel but you need to return the car back to the country of hire. You can't drop the car in a different country from where it was hired as Hertz, Budget etc are run by different franchise operators in different countries. However one company, Barloworld, own the whole Avis Southern Africa operation, so they do allow limited cross border one way rentals - between SA and Windhoek in Namibia or Gabarone in Botswana. Others may be possible. Check with Avis locally.
