We stayed at Avalone in St Lucia (http://www.avalone-guesthouse.com) in September - The Manager, Monica welcomed us with open arms and a lovely welcome and endless information after another booking we had went very awry. Monica had given us a lovely room with one of the most comfy beds we had during our whole SA stay and we felt like we were staying with a friend after 3 nights. A truly warm and lovely place to stay.

Hi lowdwer

I don't really understand your itinerary! You seem to be going in all different directions with no time scheduled to get from one place to another.

For example how do you plan to get from Sun City to St Lucia. This is about a 10-11 hour drive - probably longer with stops. Alternatively it is possible to fly from Joburg to Richards Bay, an hour or so's drive from St Lucia. But some days there is one flight a day which leaves JNB at 8:30 in the morning. To catch this flight you need to leave at least four hours before as you will be in Johannesburg rush hour traffic which is horrendous. So this is 4:30am. If you really wanted to do this I would drive to Joburg the previous day and stay overnight at the airport. Other days there are more flights but you will still use up most of a day.

Then you have the same issue getting from St Lucia to Cape Town. In this case you have a three hours drive to Durban. Then an hour and a half to drop your car and check-in to catch a two hour flight flight to Cape Town or drive to Richards Bay and fly back to Joburg and then catch another flight down to Cape Town.

Cape Town to Oudtshoorn is around five hours drive but I wouldn't try to do a Cape Peninsula tour on the same day. This alone usually takes up most of the day.

Do you have a burning reason to (a) spend two days in Johannesburg and (b) go to Sun City (this is a casino complex the same as you can find anywhere in the world).

With only 13 days I would concentrate either just on Cape Town and then Route62/the Garden Route, to Port Elizabeth and then fly back from there to Joburg to connect to your flight home. Or drive or fly to KwaZulu Natal for the first half of the holiday. St Lucia, the game parks in this area such as Hluhluwe/Imfolozi, Mkuzi, Phinda or others (depends on your budget) plus a few days in one of the beach areas between St Lucia and Durban. Then fly from Durban to Cape Town and spend the rest of your time based in Cape Town, spending half this time in and around the city and then the rest on day trips out from the city around the Cape Peninsula, out to the winelands and possibly up the West Coast.

All this, of course, depends on the time of year you plan to visit. But a trip like this will enable you to actually see much more of the country and it's people and wildlife, rather than rushing around this huge country in all sorts of different directions and seeing lots of planes, airports and freeways!

Amen. The transit times in your schedule as presented to us are so unrealistic that it's hard to respond. As mentioned above, if you would focus your time in the St; Lucia area plus a couple of days in one of the fine game reserves there (better than Pilanesberg in my opinion) it would all be so much easier. Drive to Durban, fly to Port Elizabeth. You're just under 500 miles to Cape Town with the Garden Route, Ostriches and Cango caves places you can stop en route. It would all fit easily into your 13 days and protect you and the family from frazzled nerves and exhaustive travel.

I got the iternary from a tour agent which was to be done in 9 days, so I added more days to make it seem more realistic. I think it's going in different direction because of the family members. Different people want to see different things, so we're trying to fit it in.

Sun City to St Lucia takes a 10-11 hour drive!!! I was told by the tour agents that it will take about 8 hours most. And that's why I didn't plan anything for the 1st day in St Luica as we'll definately arrive late. But definately didn't expect 11 hours of driving

We had wanted to do the garden route, but the tour agent told us it's better to drive back to Joburg from St Luica, then fly to CT and arrive in the evening or so. But from what I see here, flying from Durban to PE and do the garden route does seem much more suitable afterall!!!

Many thanks to Van_de_Caab and bwanadave. Your advice seem better by far from my tour agent!! Will be going over the iternary with my family soon

@bwanadave. so if we skip pilansberg then which game reserve so you recommend that's around St Luica?

If you don't want a private reserve then the big 5 reserve near St Lucia is Hluhluwe/Mfolozi, you can stay in the Mpila or Hilltop Camp. Mkuze is more of a birding paradise but a lovely reserve. There are lots of private reserves in the area as well.

It is about an 8 hr drive from Jhb, Pilanesberg is about another 2 hrs from Jhb, therefore the extra time as VDC points out.
