Meal Costs in Africa

Hi, Just trying to finalise our expense budget for our upcoming Africa holiday and determine cash carrying amounts. Meals are covered at some of our locations (like when on safari) but there will be times when they are not. Places in South Africa like Capetown and J'burg but also Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Can anyone give us an idea of what we are up for in terms of breakfast, lunch and dinner, drinks and tips. We are just after average estimates as a guide. There will be times when we might go budget or splash out for a special meal. Thank you.

Look at the following menus for stock standard prices. Upmarket restaurants are obviously more.

An average budget would be around $30 or R210 per person per day for 3 meals. It is possible to eat for much less than that, if you self-cater and don't use restaurants each day, or if you go for cheaper meals and fast food restaurants, etc. It is also possible to spend more than R210 per person on one decent restaurant meal. But if you break it up to R40 for breakfast, R70 for lunch and R100 for dinner, you can eat pretty well for R210 or $30 pp per day.

Drinks is another story, expect to pay on average between R10 and R20 per drink at restaurants, depending on what you drink. One coffee, one coke and one beer a day will cost around $5 or R35 total.
