exporting wine

I'm spending some time in the winelands during February and intend to send a few boxes of wine back to the UK. Can anyone explain what costs, other than the wine, are involved, and whether anything can be claimed back at the airport prior to departure...

Thanks in advance and merry Xmas!

Shipping wine you have bought to the UK is a very expensive operation. You have transport charges, customs and clearance costs, all duties that will be imposed just as if you bought it in the UK - plus UK VAT. The cost of the bottle of wine will be end up a lot more than if you buy the same bottle once you get back home.

There is also nothing that you can claim back n SA - even on wine you are carrying with you.

The first thing that you should ask at any Estate where you would like to buy some wine is do they have agents in the UK (or other appropriate EU country). Most of the major wineries will have a list of agents available to give you with contact addresses phone numbers and e-mail. Contact them when you get back and they will ship direct to you. OK you might not get the full range but the total cost will be much cheaper.

Estates will also probably have lists of main stockists in your country - supermarkets, wine store chains, specialist wine retailers so you may even be able to get that bottle locally. As you are in Manchester you stand a good chance of someone local to you. Another excellent place to look is : http://www.wine-searcher.com/ Put in the esate and the wine and your local location and you may be surprised that a guy just round the corner has the wine you like in stock!

Then there are a number of wine estates which use central EU bonded warehouses from which they will ship the wine to you including shipping, tax and VAT. Just buy on-line from the UK. Look at eWine - there are others http://www.ewine.eu/index.php?&sl=EN

If, in the end, all this fails, you can get wine shipped but it is usually more expensive than the cost of the wine.

Absolutely excellent response. Thankyou very much. A litre of gin in the case for us it is.

Yes. And buy the gin in a local liquor store. Cheaper than airport "duty free"!
