South Africa - Itinerary and Expenses

SOUTH AFRICA - ITINERARY AND EXPENSES

Hi. I spent a lovely vacation in South Africa with my girlfriend and here is my travel itinerary and expenses if anyone interested.

Dec 01 : arrived at Cape Town in the evening, checked in to ‘Townhouse hotel’ in City Bowl

Day 02 : took Open top, Red city tour one day pass (R.110) and visited Table Mountain and many other attractions/ museums in the city (buying table mountain ticket online will reduce unnecessary q time to buy ticket R.175)

Day 03 : Rented a car in the morning and drove to V&A waterfront to get a ferry to go to Robben Island (again better to buy ferry ticket online R.220). Lunch and spent some leisure time in V&A water front on returning from Robben Island visit. Afternoon drove to Cape Point and was back in hotel in the evening.

Day 04 : Checked out in the morning and started our drive on Route 62. Took N1 road up to Worcester, then Route 60. First stop was at ‘Rooiberg Wine Cellars’ to buy some wine and then stopped at ‘Klipdrift Brandy Distillery’ and took a tour (great) and tasted their brandy at the end. Took a Detour Passing Robertson, on Route 317 to visit some great vineyards. Stayed the night at “Montagu Vines’, Montagu.

Day 05 : Drove to Oudtshoorn and took some detour to visit nice passes, and had some beers at “Ronnie’s Sex Shop’. Checked in to ‘Villa Rustique’, Oudtshoorn and visited ‘Cango caves’ (very nice) and ostrich farm (very commercialized and no value for money). Spent lovely evening over few glasses of wines and nice food at ‘Buffelsdrift Game Lodge’ and returned to villa at night.

Day 06 : Drove to Knysna on Route 9/12 up to George and then ‘Garden Route’, checked in to ‘Augusta Bay Guest House’. Spent a lovely afternoon and evening drive visiting golf clubs, beaches and enjoying seafood.

Day 07 : Drove to Port Elizabeth on Garden Route and detoured to ‘Plettenberg Bay’, ‘Natures Valley’, ‘Tsitsikamma National Park’ (entry ticket on gate) and checked in to ‘Manor 38’ in the late evening.

Day 08 : Return the car at Port Elizabeth airport and flew to Johannesburg (air ticket R.885) and checked in to a Garden Court Sandton City and spent the evening in Nelson Mandela Square (just in front of the hotel).

Day 09 : Took Greyhound bus in the morning to go to Kruger National Park. Got down at Nelspruit, Rented a car and entered KNP via Malelane gate. Checked in to Berg-en-dal rest camp (R 800 per night), took 3 hour sunset drive (R 190).

Day 10 : Took 3 hour sunrise drive (R 190) and started self drive after B’fast. Self drive route was Breg-en-dal to crocodile bride rest camp (gravel road) then to Lower sabie rest camp (lunch) then up to Paul Kruger main gate and back to Berg-en-dal around 1730 hrs. Saw BIG 4 on sunset and sunrise drives and saw all BIG 5 on self drive.

Day 11 : Did 4 hour self drive in the morning before leaving KNP. Took Greyhound from Nelspruit and reached Jo’burg in the afternoon checked in to Garden Court Sandton City. Spent the evening in Nelson Mandela square eating good food and doing some shopping

Day 12 : Did some more shopping in the morning, checked out and took hotel transferred to go to airport to fly back.

Other expenses =USD 1100/=

Very helpful!! Can you share what rental car agency you used going from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and around Kruger? We plan on driving from Cape Town to George and from Durban, through Swaziland, to Kruger. What size vehicle would be appropriate for these drives...compact or mid-sized?

Hi Nagel,

remember that you must tell the rental company that you will be taking the car out of South Africa. They have to preprare additional documentation that might be asked for at the border.

Hi Sanjaya,

This is a wonderful report of your trip and thank for sharing the costs associated with each leg and the final summary of costs. I hope more people read this and see how manageable and affordable (except for the r/t air-fare) SA can be.

One question: was it working out cheaper for you to take the bus to Nelspruit and rent from there rather than renting from Joburg? Perhaps you had other reasons for doing so -- but was curious about this.

Thanks so much.

Cheers!
