Darkens bergs to St Lucia best route

We are currently planning our trip for next year and after a couple of nights in the Midland Meander we plan to drive to St Lucia. I would like to avoid Durban if possible. I would appreciate advice on the route and approx how long it would take to drive? Anywhere to stay inbetween that shouldn't be missed?

Driving through Durban is extremely easy as it is freeway all the way. You would come in on the N3 north of the main parts of Durban and at a very well signposted junction change to the N2.

PS - it is Drakensberg - Draken is Dutch or German for Dragon

The quickest, easiest and probably recommended route is to take the N3 to Durban, then the N2 north to St Lucia (turning off at Mtubatuba) - these are world class dual carriage highways. You will bypass Durban proper. The route (depending on departure point) is about 400km and 6 hours easy travelling - with road side service stations for fuel and refreshments.

If you want an adventurous trip there are numerous regional roads and routes across rural Zululand from the Midlands to St Lucia via places like Greytown, Nqutu, Nkandla, Melmoth or Ulundi. You can then consider adding battle fields and game parks to your trip but you will want to take a few days to do the trip.
