Safari in KwaZulu Natal

I am looking for a safari in KwaZulu Natal that has great game drives and activities for a 5 year old. We know about Phinda but its very expensive. Any other suggestions?

Have look at the Nambiti site below; their lodges have had good reviews on TA. Alternatively, there's the KZN wildlife reserves which could be a possibility for you.

Hluhluwe/Mfolozi Park. not much to do in the park other than game drives, but a fair amount to do in the area. Thula Thula, Bonamanzi, Zulu Nyala or stay near St Lucia Emdoneni Cheetah and wildcat sanctuary is an option and self drive Hluhluwe/mfolozi, Racing Rog is correct, though, Namibiti is a good reserves.

Hello and there are plenty of game reserves in KZN. As above Hluhluwe is a good spot and if you stay at Hill Top you can use the restaurant or self cater, and there is a swimming pool. There are game drives there or self drive routes including down to Imfolozi. Take a look at www.safarikzn.com & www.kznwildlife.com for ideas

Meredith, to get an answer better suited to your needs can you be a little clearer about what you mean by "activities for children", please? Phinda IS expensive but their children's programme is comprehensive and gives parents a free rein to do game drives unhindered whilst allowing children to explore the "wild" in a safe setting.

We have taken our daughter on safari regularly since she was a toddler and have only used a lodge once where she was looked after separately (Shamwari as she was not allowed to join us even in a private vehicle). Other than that she has come along with us and we have always entertained each other. She sometimes swims in the pools, although this is often chilly as we usually go in July/August! She paints, draws, looks for animals, etc during the day. We play games in the evenings or read (sometimes to each other). on long journeys we listen to stories (together now she's older!). We spend most of our time self-driving but her first guided safari was in Tembe in KZN near the Moz border at 23 months. She came on game drives with us and the staff were brilliant. We went again this summer as they are now a Big 5 reserve and it was as good as I remembered. They have three bed tents with en suite facilities, all meals and game activities for about $140 per adult per day all in. However, we have been very lucky as she has always been a patient, observant child who has enjoyed safaris (it will be a lot cheaper when she wants to stay put with family!). We also use Mkhuze, Hluhluwe/Imflozi, Ndumo and sometimes Ithala.
