What is the best value way to travel by train for a single person between Capetown and Johannesburg in a sleeper.

The cheapest option would be the Shosholoza Meyl. (More, to much more expensive, are Premiere Classe and the Blue Train).

On Shosholoza, single persons can share compartments with persons of the same sex, or you could pay for all the berths in one compartment and have it to yourself. We have travelled by this method a couple of times and, whilst not being luxurious, are quite adequate and this method of long distance travel does give you the chance to see the landscape. Please bear in mind that the trains are often late in arriving at their destination which could cause problems if you're needing to catch a connecting plane or similar.
