Drive from East London to Durban

We're trying to decide between driving this section or flying (which means dropping off a rental car in EL and picking up another one in Durban). Seems to be conflicting reports about a) what there is to see en route and b) time required. By the time we add up the gas and a day(?) of rental, would that equal a flight? Airports are not a great way to see the countryside though! BTW we have time on our side....that is not an issue. Is it a one day venture or is there somewhere half way to stay over? What do the experts advise?

Not all airlines fly in and out of East London and flights are expensive - ~200CAD on SAA express one way to Durban. (Can be cheaper depending how far ahead you book.) The scenery is very varied on the drive between the two cities. Depending on the time of year, the Klein Karoo around Tarkastad and Queenstown is beautiful and there are nice places to stay on farms, also Willowdale Lodge near Kokstad is a good place to stop off.

Thank you Rose....I guess we could fly from Port Elizabeth to Durban....but I'm very much leaning toward the drive...and a farm stay or Willowdale Lodge would be lovely!
