What color to wear in a Safari

We will go on several safaris in South Africa in June 2013. We read that it is important to not wear colors that will be distracting. My wife and I have fairly expensive lightweight coats - one red and one teal and would like to know if anyone has an opinion on this or knows of specific guidance we should follow.

I do not believe colors make any difference to what you see or how the animals behave.

Only issue is that if it is very dusty (and it often is!) it shows on bright colors!

Funny.. during all the years I ran safaris in east Africa, the advice was not to wear red. Which was odd, because red is THE favorite color of the Masai and Samburu tribes - the folks who live among the wildlife. No such rule anymore. But the previous post is a good observation - life can be dusty in the wide open Land Rovers. Most travelers tend to wear khaki, green. Some overspend, perhaps, and look as if they bought everything in the catalogue. In fact, layers are more important than colors. Make sure you have enough clothing to be warm in the early mornings, and after nightfall.

Thank you very much - you eased our minds and avoided spending for new coats.

Don't worry about the colour but do take a hat as it gets very dusty and you'll need a warm jacket for early mornings and evenings.

Coulours make no different, most of the animals are colour blind.

Hi everyone,

While all the above posters make a great point, there is one exception - Walking safaris/bushwalks. If you intend to be doing any of these during your stay, I would recommend neutral colors, simply because it allows you to blend into the natural environment, which may afford you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals :-).

All the best,

Is black ok? My wardrobe is all black and I keep hearing about it attracting bugs. Any thoughts?

black is absorving a lot of heat, so that is not a good idea to wear on a not sunny day
