Please help with SA itinerary : 13 nights

Hi,

I'm arriving at Johannesburg on 7th Feb with my wife for our honeymoon ! As the tickets were booked only last week, i'm in a fix what all to visit during the trip. We have 13 nights before we head for Dubai from CPT on 20th Feb. Our interests :

--> CapeTown - Sightseeing, Nightlife, Beaches, Relax

--> Suncity - Is it worth to take a day trip from JNB ? Don't find staying at Suncity a good idea given its price !

--> WineLands, Garden Route - Plan to cover Stellenbosh, Mossel Bay, Plettenberg bay, Knysna, Outdshoorn.

--> Where can i take a game safari for a day or two ?

I have planned my journey as per the below schedule. Can someone help me validating it and give some suggestions. Also, please suggest hotels at these places (Under 150 Rand each night) :

7 - arrival at JNB, 10.50 am. Local sightseeing, rest at hotel.

8 - daytour sincity, Pilansberg park

9 - early mornin flight cape town. Local sightseeing, table mountain

10 - CT- local sightseeing, cape of gud hope

11 - CT - hopon hopoff bus, beach

12 - CT - beach, shop

13 - car rental - drive to knysna via outsdhorn

14 - kynsna local, nearby areas

15 - drive to platternerg bay

16 - plattenberg bay

17 - drive to mossel bay/othr

18 - Drive to Stellenbosh

19 - Stellenbosh

20 - drive CT - flight to dubai

Many Thanks Trippers !

Finding accommodation under R150 is practically impossible. In your price range I sugges you look for backpacker accommodation. I suggest you look around in the internet. Here is a local website which will give you some idea as to what you can get for your budget: http://www.safarinow.com/default.aspx

Sun City is not worth to take a day trip unless you are planning on going on a game drive. Sun City is practically a large casino, golf course and entertainment centre.

I would suggest you stay either in Knysna or Plettenberg as these two places are not far away and can easily be done as an excursion. This gives you more time to relax.

Otherwise your schedule is fine.

Game drives you can either do in Pilanesberg or if you are in Cape Town you can go on a game drive which is a day activity. Aquila safari is about a 2 hour drive from Cape Town: http://www.aquilasafari.com/

Have fun planning and enjoy your honeymoon!

Fly to Port Elizabeth from Johannesburg and rent a car there. Then drive to Cape Town via the Garden Route & Oudshoorn as this will save a lot of time compared to driving from Cape Town and back, roughly 700 kilometers of saving as you will drive the route only once.

Many thanks for your reply Michelle

Sorry that was a typo : I meant 1500 Rand :)

Yes, that's why i was not considering Sun City. Will consider Plettenburg Bay as i want to relax more by the beach !

@ Lengau : Thanks. I have considered that too. But somewhere i read driving westwards at Garden Route, one looses some of the views. Also, is car rental expensive if i drop off at a different location ?

If you drop off a car at a different location it does cost but it's not too expensive +-R600. It does save you a days driving and more time to relax.

Seeing that you have a better budget, it would be perfect for your honeymoon if you spent 2-3 nights in a bush camp. Although these prices are higher than your daily budget, you can "make up" for it at another location.

Instead of spending 2 days in Johannesburg you could fly to the Kruger Park area (Hoedspruit) and arrange a transfer with the lodge. There are some lodges in this area that are not too pricey and you have some excellent chances of seeing the big five. Here is one lodge that I could recommend: http://www.kapama.co.za/kapama-river-lodge/.

There are safari specialists on Tripadvisor who might be able to assist you better.

From Kruger area you can then fly to Port Elizabeth or George, pick up your car and drive to Plettenberg Bay for a few days.

From there you can then drive via Mossel Bay, Stellenbosch to Cape Town.

In Cape Town, I can recommend the Cape Cadogan boutique hotel. http://www.capecadogan.co.za/default.asp. It is central, you can reach a number of shop and restaurants within walking distance. The hop-on hop off bus stop is also within walking distance and they do offer a shuttle service to the waterfront.

Another option is to stay in Camps Bay. Here is a nice guesthouse: http://www.oceanview-house.com/. Camps Bay also has a lot of restaurants, nightlife and a beautiful beach. Although from the guesthouse you will mainly need your car. There is also a hop-on hop-off bus stop in Camps Bay.

The direction you drive the Garden Route will not impact on the views.

Thanks,

I have modified my tour as per your suggestion. But finding hotels in Plett is becoming a challenge. So i'm looking at staying at Kysna now.

Also, can i do Oudtshoorn as a day trip from Knysna ? I'm planning to stay either as Oudtshoorn or Mossel Bay for couple of nights. Any suggestions please ?

If you're planning on staying in Knysna then I can recommend the Belvidere Manor. www.belvidere.co.za/accommodation/rates.html. I recommend you to stay in the Lagoon Classic as you have a beautiful house all to yourself.

This hotel is not directly in Knynsa - it's just across the lagoon but It's a quick drive into Knysna town.

Yes, you can easily do Oudtshoorn from Knysna. If you plan on visiting the Cango Caves and an Ostrich farm then plan a day for this. Therefore you can save staying over in Oudtshoorn and rather stay over in Mossel Bay.

Hi,

I think 1 night in Oudtshoorn is enough. Also 3 nights in Knysna would be enough. You can add that to Cape Town. Cape Town has lot to offer. Consider flying JNB to George to save diving time. You should also consider Shark Cage Diving in Hermanus, it would be amazing experience.

Skip Mosselbay. After your stay over in Oudshoorn drive the R62 to Stellenbosch.

Hi, you look like the tripadvisor expert on SA so I was hoping for your help. We have two weeks driving from safari near port Elizabeth to Cape Town. It has been booked through a travel firm but one leg is Plettenberg to Cape Town in one day. It looks like 7 hours of driving but I'm worried about driving at night time in Cape Town. Do you think it would be advisable to do a stop over and if so where? We are going to Camps Bay for a few nights at the end of the trip so don't want to go in that direction beforehand.
