Planning my trip. Asking questions in ernest now

Dear everyone, I started looking into SA last year for a trip this year. Unfortunately fate intervened (job loss. got a new job. Wife had to go home). Now I am planning for next year. Originally I wanted to go during your winter months so the family can come along. But when they found out that we have to wake up at 5-530 a.m. for the game rides, plus bug (hey it's the wild!), cooking (in KNP), etc. they said they will go to Ireland where my wife has a cousin. GOOD news for me. Now I can go anytime and do whatever I want. Will be asking a series of questions on this forum.

question 1; Which would be a better month to go- May or October? I have read year round is good with pros and cons for winter/summer months. Reason for asking is that airfare is cheapest around these two months. Questions with regards to a). how hot in the daytime and nighttime ( the lodge in mind have only electric fans- or none at all) b. Re. malaria. I know it is not a problem in winter but only in summer. How about the May or October?

Safari is on my bucket list before I go on a oneway trip skyward. It has to be soon because I wanted-primarily- to see Jessica and Richie the hippo before Richie gets too big to lie on my laps.

Sorry, I'm a hippo lover and I intend to see the Big 5 plus 1.

Thanks for putting up with me

Hello and I was in KwaZulu Natal last May into June. And what a lovely time to be there. Warm dry sunny days and cool nights. Excellent for game viewing. I have been a couple of times in October and the weather has been not so good with quite a bit of spring rain. However my experiences are nearly all in KZN. Its worth considering when planning your visit as it has so much of everything. Great game reserves, vast beaches and spectacular mountains.

Hi Mark. Thanks for your opinion. BTW I saw your website! Great.

Anyway, I have to be in the Kruger area. That is where point of my whole trip is. The tame?? hippos Jessica and Richie. If I get a lot of kinda negative re. October, I guess I'll have to go with winter months.

Once again, thanks!

IMHO September/October are the best months to travel Kruger Park.

It will be quite hot already, but not as Dec/Jan. The grass will be low (better visibility) and water is normally still sparse as the rainy season is only starting, which means the big waterholes are more rewarding.

When I say rainy season, that means the one or other thunderstorm, not rain all day long.

No problem and thank you but if you get the chance get yourself to KZN.......somewhere like Tembe where you have the chance of seeing some of the last remaining genuine Tusker Elephants...some of the only Tuskers in the whole of Africa! Have a wonderful trip!

Hi bigwawao

Fantastic that you 'must be' in the Kruger area, it means you get to go to the jewel in the crown of South Africas wildlife areas.

Either time of the year will be great to visit, if you are concerned about the heat best to avoid summer if your accommodation is not airconditioned.

I agree with Klaus, October is an excellent time, the lower grass will help with game viewing and it wont be too hot.

BTW I saw your question to me re the rental phone and will get back to you on that.

What a shame about your family, if only they know what they will be missing out on at 5.30 in the morning ..it is just the best time in Kruger !

Hi there bigwawao,

Yipee! I am so excited that you are now planning your trip - I have seen you around the forums a lot and am super excited for you!

Let's hope that we can all help you out :).

I live right here in the Kruger area, and Jessica the hippo lives about 20 minutes away from me :).

Let's take a peek at your questions.

question 1; Which would be a better month to go- May or October? I have read year round is good with pros and cons for winter/summer months.

Well, for the Kruger area, the best months are actually May, June, July, August and all the way to Oct. October is getting quite hot here though, you will be looking at around 27 degrees daily. It will be a little bit chilly around dawn and dusk still, so pack a nice warm outfit too. Also, it is the beginning of our rainy season here too - So you may encounter the odd thunderstorm. The bush is beginning to get green too, so the animals will become more spread out, instead of centering around water sources.

May is going to be a lot cooler, so the animals will be more active. You are looking at around 23 degrees daily. If it were only a Kruger trip, then I would say May is the month to go.

However, as you may want to go to the Cape etc, October will be generally warmer all around the country.

Malaria is always a risk, regardless of the time of year - Obviously a higher risk at times, and a lower risk at others. But anyway, I live here and do not take malaria meds as I would have to take them every day of my life! :).

There is a common misconception that everyone who comes to the Kruger will get malaria, but the truth is that there are millions of visitors that pass through without even a mosquito bite.

Anyway - regardless of which month, just chat to your doc when you have decided, and get their advice :).

Which lodge did you have in mind?

All the best, and warm regards,
