General car hire question for Joburg to Kruger

I'm not sure whether we should pick up the car from the airport when we land in the morning or nor. We're planning to hire a driver for 1 day in Joburg to show us the sights before driving over to Kruger.

Any advice would be appreciated. Also, should we stay at a hotel nr the airport or get picked by the driver and go to town and pik up the car in town the next day.

I would pick up the car the next day, but it depends were you would like to stay, there a lot of lovely B&B in and around Joburg and then you will need a car to get there, or ask for an airport transfer and hire the car the next day. And ask the driver to pick you up at your B and B.

Or stay at the Town lodge hotel at the airport.

Have fun

If you stay at a hotel near the airport you could pick up the car next morning. The major car rental companies are located at the airport or should I say v near ie walking distance. Use this link for map showing location .http://www.acsa.co.za/home.asp?pid=3651

It is much easier to get your car at the airport and then from there straight to the Kruger. Then you do not need to drive in Johannesburg traffic in the morning. Very easy to get on the highway to Kruger from the airport. But this all depends where you stay.

Enjoy your trip.

Agree with Felleng. Get the car at the airport. Very easy to get on road to Kruger. Nice drive, good roads. Make sure you have rand for tolls. Most hotels near airport have shuttles. Shuttle drop right next to rental pick up.

I always get the vehicle (Avis ) as soon as I have de planed as I prefer to get out of the city and get under way but for a very late PM arrival ( from here there isn’t any ) that would be a different matter. I always take my Tom Tom which is loaded with a SA map ( although you can do without ) and plug in the destination so as to make the exit from the city much easier than trying to drive , sign and map read and deal with the traffic in downtown Joburg. Depending on your time frame either drive straight to Kruger ( don’t forget gate closing times and they are rigidly enforced ) but if you are tired or have more time plan a scenic route and stop overnight before entering Kruger.

This is an easy one. Stay the night at one of the hotels at the airport and leave for safari from there the next morning. There are the Peermont hotels at the Casino on the airport groounds - www.peermonth.co.za.. there is the City Lodge that is actually connected to the Terminals - https://www.citylodge.co.za/cl13.php.. and then there's the more expensive Airport Sun Intercontinental, also at the Terminals, a short walk across the driveway.

Hello, i suggest staying at the Airport Grand Hotel. Take the shuttle which leaves from the bus terminus. Then your guide/driver can collect you the next day and take you to see the tourist attractions. Next day, take the free shuttle from the Airport Grand to the airport, pick up your rental car(or ask them to drop if off, even better) and from the airport you are just about 3 km from the main highway heading out to Kruger on the N4.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I was thinking of one of the hotels in the Emperors Palace complex, hire a private car and driver to take us around and have a meal at one of the many restaurants there. Next day, use the hotel's airport shuttle to pick up the hire car and head for Kruger.

Hello Jim, yes thats a good idea, stay at the Metcourt Suites, many of my clients stayed there, and were very happy. You also have a good choice of restaurants there as well. Have you sorted out your tour yet?

I'm only at the planning stage, we're starting from Joburg , then head off to Kruger, probably now Easter 2015 as we haven't booked anything. Reading the posts, lower Sabie's going to be crowded round Easter so we'll probably book Olifants for 3 days followed by a couple of days around Blyde Canyon, hiking, taking the panoramic route followed by 2 days at Gomo Gomo private game reserve. Then drop the hire car at Nespruit and catch a flight to Cape Town where we would our last few days. That's the iterinary I've planned so far, thanks to TA
