travelling in south africa

we have never been to south africa. What my thoughts are were two centre holiday, a week in Cape Town and a Week in Port elizabeth, and to hire a car to tour the area - does anybody know how safe it is to do this?

Probably similar safety as driving around Lancashire. Seriously, many people do trips very similar to your suggested plan all the time. This forum is full of people who will attest to that, having done it themselves. The Western Cape is a very popular tourist destination, and Port Elizabeth as well. You will find the roads and facilities to be in good condition, the hotels and restaurants excellent, and the people friendly.

Many people consider these areas to be the best of South Africa, and certainly a great area to explore on your first trip there. Use common sense as you would when travelling anywhere unfamiliar. Keep pretty much anything out of sight in the car, especially when leaving it unattended. Watch out for the mini-bus taxi drivers, who will stop anywhere (even in the middle of an intersection), and ask for and follow the advice of locals.

Helllo, the Cape is a top destination, and you can combine seeing the scenery, culture and tasting fine wines with a safari as well. Good idea to hire a car, then you can also stop off along the way to visit Addo elephant Park on your way to Port Elizabeth. around the J Bay area, there is also a Wolf Sanctuary, and a Monkey Sanctuary. The biggest bungi jump in the world and the dwarf chameleon is also on your route. So you have chosen well for your holiday.
