Reserve near Johannesburg - budget!

I am wondering if there are any options for budget game viewing 2-3 hours from Joburg? Budget as in basic and under $150/night.

We were looking at Pilanesberg as that seems to be the only one with a budget option - Manyane. But I'm seeing some lousy reviews - are there other similar spots?

Google "Valley View Guest House Pilanesberg". Had the same problem, considering this accommodation for myself. 3km from the entrance gate. Haven't been there yer, though.

Try Bakgatla or somewhere else at Pilanesberg pilanesberggamereserve.com/pilanesberg-game-…

This is a self-drive option.

Or go to Welgevonden.org park 3 hours North of Joburg. Siper place to be. And the week the prices are not too high at all. And they have the big 5 and is malari free.

The Park Welgevonden is in Waterberg and so beutiful area.

Would you consider a flight from Jo'burg to Nelspruit MQP airport under an hour flight we have just booked one way was $90. Hire a car for $25 a day. Self Drive around Kruger park entry $25 day. Look at sanparks accommodation in the park or look at hotels near gate. We are staying at Protea Kruger Gate Hotel and Half board is $100 double Superior room per night. Look at accommodation around Hazyview something like ; Ashbourne Hazyview $75 for their Honeymoon cottage. We book all your accommodation from www.bookings.com.

Above suggestion by princess is excellent and you get to see the jewel in the crown of South Africas parks!

Kruger is definitely a budget option if you do not look at the private reserves. Stay in bungalows right with the wildlife inside Kruger for $100 a night, or less if you use a communal kitchen or eat out.

Have a look here for some information and ideas..

Have you considered perhaps the Cabanas at Sun City which adjoins the Pilanesberg? Depending on the time of the year, this may fit into your budget. You can either then self drive into the park at whichever time suits you or use the Sun City Gametrackers which take you in in their safari vehicle. Early morning and late afternoon drives.

Hello and take a look at Nambiti Pvt Game Reserve. Its a bit further than you have mentioned at approx 3 /12 - 4 hours from Joburg. Its actually in KwaZulu Natal and its a stunning location with the Big 5 and stacks of other game. Its also malaria free. There is lots of open savannah and the back drop is the Drakensberg mountains. We have been several times and I am sure that a least a couple of the lodges could be close to your budget.
