How much spending money to take?!

Hi everyone,

Hoping you can help advise us on how much spending money we should be taking.

We are going to South Africa on our Honeymoon in August, we will be spending the first week all inclusive at Kariega Private Game Reserve in Port Elizabeth, so the only spends we will need that week will be for anything we want to buy from the gift shop and for tips. On that point, how much should you tip your guide? Do you tip anyone else?

The second week we will be staying in Cape Town bed and breakfast. We're planning to book and pay for a couple of day trips (Hermanus Whale Watching and Great White Shark Diving) here before we go. We'll hopefully be doing Table Mountain and Robben Island (weather permitting) and will do a little shopping and meals. We're not posh/fancy eaters so won't be looking for anywhere too extravagant to eat.

Also should we be taking South African Rand or Pounds/Dollars? The gift shop at the safari lodge only accept South African Rand and we had seen a South African Rand pre payment card that may be a good idea?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You tip the guide, the tracker and the staff. In terms of how much, there are others better at this. But you shouldn't need more than a ZAR1000 for this. Alternatively contact the hotel before you leave and ask what they recommend.

In terms of spending money, ZAR1000 per day should be more than enough to cover things for the two of you. Can definitely get away with less though. You could easily have a pub dinner with a few drinks and the total bill be no more than a ZAR300.

You will definitely need SA Rand, I'm not aware of anywhere accepting other currency. Definitely pre-load a card with Rand to avoid carrying lots of cash, try and get one that you can top up online, or alternatively your credit cards will work and you can get money from ATMs with your debit card.

We rely on our cash card as ATM machines are plentiful and we don't like carrying large amounts of cash. The pound is very strong against the rand at the moment (check out the trend over the last 10 years on www.XE.com) so you may want to order some rand to take with you to keep you going on arrival. I have to admit to not having used preloaded cards but this is because of my ignorance. Perhaps it is something we should all be considering in future . . .

Another vote for the ATM. We tip our guides about $2 USD per trip per person.

Thanks for your replies, they are very helpful.

We have been looking at a preloaded South African Rand Mastercard to take the majority of our spending money, but are going to take cash for the safari part.

This definitely helps to give us an idea of how much to take with us. Thanks again
