Amanzi Travel -- Selati Lion and Rhino Tracking

Has anyone done the Selati Lion and Rhino Tracking in South Africa through Amanzi Travel? (amanzitravel.com/selati-lion-and-rhino-track…)

I've read nothing but great reviews on the company itself, but I'd like some reviews on the actual trip before I book. I'd like to make sure it's a real volunteer experience where I'll be actually contributing and helping the animals, not working for free in a zoo-type setting.

I don't know about this specific project but this company offers volunteer placements at lion cub rearing/walking with lions establishments (read the lengthy thread about this in the Top Questions). On that basis, I'd give them a miss.

If you want something similar to the project you're looking at (tracking animals in the wild) then try Wildlife ACT, who do monitoring of lions, elephants, wild dog and cheetah in various parks in KZN.

Hello Haley

Good that you are doing your research and unfortunately circumstances have proven that many of these 'volunteer' organizations are not what they seem to be. This has really been bought out into the open lately. Have a look at the thread mentioned above, but also have a look here…

I will say upfront I knew nothing of Selati reserve, it is privately owned and not part of Kruger.

So I had a quick look out of interest and came across some interesting sites…

For example:

On the Texas Hunting Forum..

""Join ***** from ****** Safaris on this unique male lion hunt.Hoedspruit area South Africa.30 000 hectares Selati Private Game Reserve/Sandringham Game Ranch8000 hectares bordering Timbavati and Kruger National Park. You will find abundance of all South African game whether PG or Big five. One stop hunting for all species.

Bait and blind method.

If by any change lion not taken refund $20 000.*** has a 100% success rate so far.

>1 male lion trophy

>All bait included

>12 days hunting 2 travel days.

>Full board and lodging at 4 Star Selati Lodge

>Trackers and skinners

> Superb kept hunting vehicles

>Field prep of trophy

Another :

**** Safari's invites you to take up this great deal.

Elephant bull hunt (25 lb) at Selati Private Game Reserve Hoedspruit (30 000 hectares) Limpopo . Price$25 000 normal price $30 000. Includes full 10 days accommodation at 3 star lodge. The best PH you can dream off.

Trackers and Skinners.

Delivering of trophies to taxidermist.

Video of hunt available at extra cost.Relive this hunt with your friends.

Not included Hiring of rifles.(We will assist you if you want to bring your own rifle).Taxidermy and airfreight to home.

Photos attached of recent hunts on Selati game Reserve.

Don't miss hunting on this reserve.Animals in excellent condition. You will return once you tasted the professional service and excellent lodges. All other game and predators available.

Now I would say that these activities are carried out well away from areas that you would be, but to me it says a lot about the reserve owners.

Took me just a few minutes to find all this out, didn’t look at the offered photos of hunts.

Great research thesandmans.

Why not just go as a tourist and try to find the animals yourself. It's what we all end up doing and you will love it. By taking money not the area you will encourage the protection and preservation of these wonderful animals.

Fantastic research!!!

All I know about Selati is that they have had A LOT of rhinos poached there.

I completely agree with Jonh; Rather seek them out in the wild, in the great and untamed KRUGER!

Whether you self drive or stay in a lodge, you can book (if self driving) or just partake (lodge) in a bush walk/walking safari experience, which goes for 1.5-3 hours depending on what you see. These walks focus on tracking animals and learning about the little things too - And, you get to be up close and personal with a lot of our wildlife in their natural environment.

Thank you sandmans, I guess the "Lion trophy" was Shaka, a poor old lion monitored by the volunteers at Leo. He was indeed hunted in 2013.
