Gate 1 Travel Trip to South Africa - Highly Recommend!

Just finished a trip by Gate 1 to South Africa, including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. It was FABULOUS!

Gate 1 did an outstanding job organizing our adventures, arranging meals, giving us free time, and booking our hotels. I feel they provided all of us an excellent experience and I would not change a thing. The hotels were excellent and well situated to seeing the area we were visiting. They arranged for us to see all the important sites and arranged special guides that were experts on those sites to speak with us. The meals were mostly included-- there was plenty of food and all of it was delicious. I did not have a bad meal and probably should have eaten less!

Roger was our guide during the whole trip and he was simply outstanding. He is from Cape Town and gave us a tremendous amount of information about the people and explained to us what we were seeing. He was delightful and had a great sense of humor! If you decide to take the Gate 1 tour, I would recommend you ask when Roger is leading the group.

Our favorite place was Botswana. It is where we saw the most animals. The river cruise Gate 1 arranged was incredible...our Botswana expert (his name was "Pretty") pointed out all the birds, lions, hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and giant lizards. He was amazing in his knowledge and everyone enjoyed him.

On our last morning, Roger was able to arrange a last minute early morning game drive and to our surprise, we finally saw lions--11 of them to be exact.

Gate 1 will not disappoint you. They arranged a great trip and were well organized. We encountered no problems and the trip went smoothly.

We do get questions from folks who prefer to use an organized and escorted trip - I'm glad to hear about the quality of the one you took… a very strong recommendation for Gate1.

Nice to hear you had a good time. As I note this is your first post perhaps you could post reviews of all the places you went to and give more info

Glad to hear you liked the trip. We are leaving from JFK to Cape town Aug 24 for our 16 day tour with Gate1. Have never use this tour company before. I am looking into getting my shots now. Any "MUST" see in Cape town? One of my friends stayed in Cape town for 5 days before she boarded the cruise ship in CT. She said that CT reminded her of my home tcity of Vancouver, Canada.

I recently returned from the 12 day Gate 1 South Africa trip. Gate 1 will take you on a full day tour of the Cape Peninsula sights and also a half day city and Table Mountain tour. Then you will have 1 1/2 "free" days in Cape Town. After reading so many negative Trip Advisor reviews of Robben Island and the questionable safety of the boats, we decided not to do that and instead on the 1/2 day we visited the waterfront and the Aquarium. On the full day, I found a wonderful tour guide (I can give you the details in a private message if you want) who did a customized private tour for us in the winelands for a much cheaper price than the Gate 1 optional tour there. Since you are going in August, you may want to do a full day trip from Cape Town to Hermanus for whale watching, which she could also arrange for you. Let me know if you have any questions about the Gate 1 trip.

WE are going to SA on our own in a couple of months. But are seriously considering going with Gate1 for a trip to Thailand next year. Good to hear the positive experiences with Gate1.

Hi.

We are planning to do the 12 day South African trip in January and would like any pros and cons on Gate 1. Also, if you could give me the name of the private wine tour I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

Gate 1 pros: The tour package included a lot for a reasonable price; the tour guide was fantastic and we learned a lot about South Africa; the hotels were pretty good. Cons: Overall I had no complaints with Gate 1 at all. Any tour like this, though, does include quite a bit of time on the bus and you are traveling with a large group which may or may not create problems. In our case there were 39 in our group which is a lot, but everyone was an experienced traveler so we never had issues with people being late or annoying. No matter how well everyone gets along, it's always nice to have some time away from the group, which is one of the reasons we booked some of our own tours. In Cape Town we went with a woman named Cathy who runs her own small travel business. She has various tours listed on her website, but she was willing to customize the day for us and take us wherever we wanted to go. Our whole day to the winelands only cost about $50 each and included the cost for the Stellenbosch museum, Cheetah Outreach, wine cellar tour, and wine tasting. Here's the link to the winelands tour: personalcapetowntours.com/tours/winelands-to… and here's a link to some Trip Advisor reviews: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g3175481-d… I haven't written a review for her yet, but I do plan to. We also booked our own full day private Kruger safari with Frank Watts of The Other Animals Safaris, which cost less than the 1/2 day safari with a group of 10 that Gate 1 was offering. Again, I highly recommend him. We booked another private tour in Johannesburg to the Cradle of Humankind, but were not as happy with that tour guide so I won't mention him on here but can give you more information in a private message if you want.

We just booked a 12 day Classic South Africa and welcomed your information. Did you do your full day Kruger safari instead of the half day included with Gate 1?

After I had booked my Gate 1 South Africa trip, I asked on this forum about the day in Kruger. I was told that after the included morning safari, you have to go all the way back to the hotel and then drive all the way back to Kruger if you book the optional afternoon safari. Driving back and forth like that wastes a lot of time and you are not able to go as far into the park. We wanted to maximize our time and decided to book our own full day safari and just not go on the included morning trip with Gate 1. We were able to book a full day private excursion for just the 2 of us for less than the cost of the Gate 1 optional afternoon 1/2 day safari with the group. Our guide was wonderful and had very good credentials (Frank Watts - The Other Animals Safaris). With that said, though, as it turned out everyone in our group had booked the optional tour so the group also ended up staying in the park all day instead of returning to the hotel. We had no way of knowing that in advance, however.

If you could do it again, would you choose the optional private tour or include the 1/2 day with Gate 1? Also, does Frank pick you up and drop you at your hotel?
