affordable leopard viewing alternative

Any recommendations for more affordable leopard viewing alternatives in South Africa?

Know Sabi Sands is good to spot these animals but prices there are far to expensive for us.

Thanks for your feedback.

The area around skukuza is great for leopards and staying in sanparks camps is much easier on the pocket

Its all about luck.

Just back from Africa on Foot, stayed 3 nights and saw 2 leopards. Very affordable place.

If you are going there just to see Leopards go to a zoo. This is a country full of wild animals and no sightings are guaranteed.

I second Skukuza and surrounds for very good chances of seeing leopard at a very moderate or even budget price.

Hello PeterenDavy

Justin the OP never said he only wants to see leopards, and these elusive creatures are always high on peoples wish list, especially if it is a one and only trip. At least they are not asking for Big 5!

Yes it is true the leopard viewing can be incredible in Sabi Sand, right now in the west there are two females with two cubs each, but you are paying big $ for the close up priviledge, and there is nothing quite like it. A cheaper alternative could also be Timabavati, we have had great leopard viewing there.

Agree the Kruger camps are clearly the best budget option, at possibly ten percent of the price.

In Kruger the triangle around Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Croc Bridge has one of the most dense leopard populations in the world, but yes there is still no guarantee!! We have had multiple sightings around Lower Sabie, but of course they can cause a bit of a traffic jam at busy periods.

Also had sightings towards Pretoriaskop Camp as well as further north, where they are a bit more sparse, but being quieter the viewing can be wonderful.

What about a combination, or would that stretch the budget too much?

Sandmans mentioned the Timbavati as a more affordable alternative to the Sabi Sand. I agree with her. Some good options to consider would be Simbavati River Lodge and Ngala Safari Lodge. At both of these lodges I have enjoyed magnificent leopard viewing.

Thanks to all for your help.

Umkumbe Safari lodge and Elephant Plains in Sabi Sands seem to have less pricier rates as well.
