Planning a three weeks trip in south africa

hi, me and my wife are looking for some advice in an itinerary for a three weeks trip to south Africa, we land in Johannesburg on the 19 of september 2014.

Our plan is:

Drive from Johannesburg to kruger national park, spend there 4 nights and then visit blyde canyon and the panoramic road on our way back to Johannesburg.

From Jb we will take a flight to port elizabeth and again rent a car and start going south throw the garden route and in the end cape town.

Our goal is not chasing to much places (thats why we are not going to drakensberg) but explore the garden route slowly.

Our second plan is:

Johannesburg and kruger is the same but from kruger going south to st lucia and spending there 3 nights and from there to durban and catching a flight to port elizabeth and the garden route and cape town in the end.

What do you think? In our second plan we drive a lot more but we get to see also the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

thank you

Hello and take a look at internal low cost flights to cut down on driving. We use mango & Kulula between cities, normally Johannesburg to Durban & back. The iSimangaliso wetlands are a lovely destination as is the close by Hluhluwe-Imfolozi game reserve. Lots to see & do in that particular area. Seasonal whales & turtles are always a highlight.

Hi. We are there in September for a similar time period - 45 year old couple and our 11 year old. We decided on 4 nights Sabi Sands and Kruger, flying direct down from Nelspruit to Durban for the wetlands (3 nights St Lucia and 3 nights on the beach at Umhlanga Rocks). Our other segment is Port Elizabeth to Capetown - flying into PE, 3 nights at Samara Game Lodge ( which is semi desert with aardvarks, cheetahs, meercats and foxes so a great contrast to the Big 5 at Kruger and the wetlands). From Samara via Oudtshoorn (ostriches) and Hermanus (whales) to Capetown by car.

I must agree with the itinerary posted by Sue Bee. Fly into Durban from Nelspruit and do the 3 hour drive up to Northern Natal. Then fly out from Durban to Port Elizabeth.

Enjoy your trip and safe travels!
