Best cash card & sat nav to take/use in South Africa?

Hi, we're off to South Africa shortly for a month travelling around and want to take a pre-loaded cash card/cash passport for funds to withdraw via ATM's. I thought I'd nailed it with a Travelex one, but have just read numerous negative reviews online where users have used it overseas encountering numerous problems. Any suggestions of cash cards that have worked well and hopefully without incident in SA are greatly appreciated please. Obviously we want to keep withdrawal fees to a minimum.

We'd also like advice on a sat nav to use there. Are free App downloads for android smart phones worthwhile or a waste of time? I'm wondering about using my phone's GPS system as sat nav rental prices from car hire companies there are stupidly expensive, about £5+ a day!! Cheaper to buy a new sat nav!

Thanks in advance for any replies/suggestions.

The TomTom app works brilliantly in SA, and works without data so you don't need to get a local sim. Can't comment on prepaid cards, we always just travel with a normal Visa credit card.

Most people use their everyday Visa debit or Visa credit cards (or Mastercard). Easy cash withdrawal at ATMs and EFTPOS transactions. Just be sure to notify your bank in advance of your travels.

Hi there,

I would recommend just using your normal Visa debit card - just check with your bank what rates are applicable. This way, it is 100% guaranteed.

R.e sat nav on the phone - I've never had experience with the Tom Tom one, but in my area (in the Kruger region) the car GPS is the most reliable.

Many thanks for this. Since posting my questions we've established as suggested that it's probably best to use a UK debit card, or even credit card if needs be. Our currency dealer doesn't even use a cash card as he's heard of numerous problems.

We've ordered a SA map on a Gramin sd card to use, so hope this will be ideal.

Appreciate your comments.

We used Tom Tom app on iPhone and it was brilliant. We used our usual MasterCard without any problems. We also took prepaid MasterCard bought at Post Office and that was great. Took a bit of cash. We were there for three weeks and never had to use the ATM. Definitely remember to tell your bank that you are planning to use credit/debit cards in SA and then you should have absolutely no problems.

Hi, appreciate your comments/advice. As well as our sat nav I think we'll also be downloading a map onto our phone as a back up. Many thanks, Lee
