Safe neighborhoods in Johannesberg?

Hello~ What are some safe areas recommended for an American moving to Johannesberg for 6-12 months?

Any specific areas to avoid? Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

You'll want to steer clear of Yeoville/Bellevue and Hillbrow/Joubert Park and probably the Joburg CBD, which is fine, but not for the uninitiated. There are many safe areas, so if you give an indication of where you will be working or otherwise occupied for several months, I could give a better suggestion about where to stay

Hello, as previous post avoid the old downtown Johannesburg. The new CBD is Sandton. This is a vibrant metropolis, safe and much to offer. Hotels, shopping and Gautrain service. There are also new self catering Apartment suites look at Empire, just opened and great locality. Then out towards the north, there is Fourways,

Great area, guest houses, Montecasino complex, shopping centers, health clubs, theaters, cinemas and connected to Sandton by Gautrain bus. Slightly cheaper as well. Lots of gated townhouse complexes as well where you could rent.
