expert advice please

We had a wonderful holiday in Tanzania last year and really want to return to Dar and Ras Kutani. But we do not want to go to a safari camp this time and are looking for a nice option for the rest of our holiday. Are finding tour operators very unimaginitive - they keep telling us to go to kenya instead.

What we are looking for is either some nice inland place (it could be a ranch/ plantation) where the only focus is not game viewing. We dont mind if it is on the edge of a reserve and game viewing is an option - just not sole focus on game viewing. it would be nice to be able to walk around a bit. Other possibilities are a part of the coast with a different feel to Ras Kutani - an island - but NOT Zanzibar, or one of the Lakes. Finally anywhere else that anyone thinks might be interesting.

We like upmarket accomadation and within reason cost is not a problem. We have 2 kids and we have taken them all over the world. We HATE being pointed to so called "family options" - they have happily been to safari camps, intimate lodges etc many times.

Can anyone suggest anywhere we might like?

Mfuwe is right on the times to get from Lushoto to Tanga, and it's difficult to get to Pangani from Tanga, the road is not all that good so you need to go slow. Actually it's closer to go to Pangani from Lushoto rather then going into Tanga town itself. The scenery is wonderful from Lushoto to Tanga, rugged mountains, deep valleys, and lots of sisal plantations that go on for miles and miles (I have an affinity for sisal farming and enjoy watching the operations).

It will be chilly at altitudes, which you will have in the highlands and at Lushoto. By chilly I mean that you will need at least a jacket in the evenings. Lushoto is an old German settlement where the Germans went to get away from the heat of the coast, and of course began to plant crops that they enjoyed which grew well there (lots of fruits and vegetables). Tanga is where the Germans settled first when they were creating their empirical German East Africa, and you'll see some of their old colonial buildings, monuments to their landings, and even an old German soldier cemetery in the center of the town (left from when things weren't going so well for them). I've always suspected that the word Tanga was a derivative of Tanganyika which is what the mainland Tanzania is called.

You will not find upscale accommodations in Lushoto, but will in Tanga and Pangani. Not that the accommodations are not good, just not touristy at all and a little tattered on the edges.
