car hire

we are planning a second visit to Tanzania this coming summer. We like to be a bit independent and would like to know what you people think about hiring a car and self driving if we are based in areas such as Arusha, Tanga and Lushoto. We are confident travellers and have done self drive many times in Malawi. Tour operators seem to be saying it is a no, no - but think that is because they want us to have a guide and driver...

You'll need to made arrangements for lodging, unless you're camping, on your own. If you know how to do that then you should be OK. I have driven from Dar and Arusha to Tanga/Lushoto many times without difficulty. The difficulty comes into play when you have car trouble, which is why I always hire a driver who is a good mechanic to drive me when I'm going out into the bush. I pay them by the day, and put them up in local accommodations.

Some care hire companies will not let you take a vehicle out of town without using their drivers, which will be included in the cost per day. Perhaps you might want to check with Fortes Car Hire, which has offices in Arusha and Mwanza. Their web site is www.fortescarhire.com

There's another post on this forum concerning some Garmin Maps which, if you have a Garmin GPS, you might find useful. They have mapped out some of the roads, pit stops, etc. Do a search for this any you'll probably find it.
