Australia > Tanzania flights insanely expensive? And long...

Am i missing something or is $3000 the lowest going rate these days to fly from Sydney to Tanzania?

Also i've noticed many flights go via London and it all ends up taking 37 hours! Argh, that would be horrible.

Geographically it makes no sense to fly to London then back down to Africa!

Any aussies here have any suggestions for saving money & time on flights?

Yes i am picky with my airlines, but even going with Qantas would cost around $3000 per person.

Try booking the legs of the flight singerly. I know it sometimes cuts it down.

Also think flight centre is doing a deal at the moment

fly Emirates via Dubai to Nairobi this is the shortest route

then once in Nairobi either fly to Tanzania on a local flight or go overland by shuttle bus or get a private transfer organized probably by your tour operator but not free.

Coming in via the Gulf area will be the better option. Not only Emirates but Gulf will fly into DAR.

Also consider Ethiopian via Addis.

None is cheap and it may well pay to route via Europe and bite on the hours or enjoy a short layover. I have just done LHR-DAR for £590. Add in a cheapy from OZ and you can save on the $3,000.

I found fares for Feb 2010, SYD/NBO, from $2,010, to about $2,600/person return. On Singapore, Qatar, Emirates, Ethiopian... travel time seem to all be more than 25/hrs.

Check www.kayak.com with your actual dates and see what prices they show. You are traveling a long way, so those fares aren't all that outrageous.

4sandi - My prices were in Australian dollars so about $3000aud / $2400usd.

I think theres only a couple of airlines i'd want to fly with that far - Emirates and Qantas

Well its certainly going to be the biggest expense of my trip thats for sure!

noexpert - if i flew into Nairobi how long is the drive from there to Arusha (or anywhere else i'm likely to end up at first in TZ)

I fear if Im flying into Kenya then i wont want to leave there!

The drive from Nairobi to Arusha is about 5 hours by shuttle bus. Last time I looked at the price it was $35

I should have researched before asking that :)

I thought it would be a hassle going through the border but obviously it isn't.

Now I need to work out whether if I book through Emirates will they allow a 1 night stop over in Dubai. I'd rather start working off jet lag before I get to Africa.

just a suggestion instead of ovenighting in Dubai I would overnight in Nairobi and either fly to Arusha or the Serenegti the next morning for safari start or catch the 8:00 am shuttle bus to Arusha arriving around 1:30 pm then head off on safari

Dubai is a bit of a novelty for me (expensive one), always wanted to go there for some reason. But its mainly to break the flight up, its 5 hours from Dubai to Nairobi and 14 hours from Sydney to Dubai.

After 14 hours I think i'd be happy to get off the plane, sleep in a hotel and hopefully kick some of the jetlag before flying another 5 hours and arriving in Africa.

I see your point about overnighting in Nairobi but a 19 hour flight is something i want to avoid..
