Need a critique for my Tanzania Trip!

Hi! I am planning a trip for my husband and I to Tanzania during Feb 2011. We both have never been there, so we need some advice. =)

I'm using Access 2 Tanzania, and Karen seems really sweet.

We arrive and our first trip is to Arusha N.P. Next we go to Lake Manyara. How is this comparable to Tangire NP? Can we do both in one day or we need two days? Or is just one of them ok? We then go to the Ngorongoro Crater Game drive for one day. Next day she has us down for the Olmoti Crater hike/Conservation area. Has anyone does this hike? Is it worth it or can we take it off the trip? The day after, we are still in the crater area/olduvai gorge and move to the serengeti(Ndutu area) to see the migration, in the migration tent camps, which i read are pretty awesome. The next 2 days are here in the serengeti, and then we move to a different campsite within the seregeti for another 2 days. I would like to add in somewhere a trip to the village or hospital area( I'm a physician).

Anything you think we can take out? or we should add in? I'm not sure I need 2.5 days in the ngorongoro crater area....and how worth it the hike and all is...we have one day for a game drive in the crater, i thought that was enough. Also how is Dar es salaam? is it worth adding onto the trip? Thanks!

If you ae not really hikers I would drop the Olmoti side trip.

Manyara and Tarangire are different but you cannot do them both in a day. You could visit Tarangire on the return leg if you have dropped Olmoti.

You may find that 5 days in the Serengeti a bit wearying as beginners but that is very subjective. The mass of wildebeeste etc., whilst unique and awesome could be boring after a while although the predators will keep you alert.

Forget Dar es Salaam. Not worth the long trip for just a look.

We did our safari with A2T and was very happy. Preferred Taranguire to Manyara due to the amazing amount of animals we saw. If time is limited don't miss Taranguire. If you have time do both, one each day. As far as the Olmoti Crater hike, we did it and enjoyed it very much. It's not a super strenuous hike. The altitude was more challenging then the actual vertical footage. Great view from the top of the surrounding crater and village below. If you enjoy physical activity it's a nice change from being in the vehicle constantly. I also thought the bike ride was enjoyable. Rode down the rift into the village and on to the valley. Saw lots of local people, and many animals. The bike guide was very knowledgable. The ride was moderate, not difficult, but the trails are unpaved and a bit rough. You'll enjoy what ever you decide to do. Karen is very helpful in picking the right things for you to do.

I would certainly not recommend going to Lobo or Lake Natron or climbing Ol Donyo Lengai, (which is what I believe William is referring to).

Stick around SE Serengeti/NCA. Hike Olmoti if you need to take exercise and have the day to spare! I don't think you do especially if this means missing Tarangire.

Arusha NP is lovely and off the heavy tourist trail. If you have the opportunity then go for a walk with an armed ranger from the park HQ up to the waterfall.

Tarangire and Manyara NPs are very different to each other and both merit a visit. However avoid Tarangire in the rainy season, the game have dispersed and the Tetse flies are a menace! The walk up to Olmoti crater is rather lovely and does give an opportunity to be out and about on foot - it can be a strenuous walk due to the altitude and you need an armed ranger as escort. The views at the top are worth it. however.

We can never get enough of the Ngorongoro & Serengeti areas. We spent 7 days in that area last September and another four days there in April. Next years plans are in progress!

Thanks everyone for your advice! We spoke with Karen and she advised that in February Tarangire wouldnt be a good idea because we wouldnt see that many animals and lake manyara is better...My husband and I are wondering which airport to fly into...We coming in from NYC..and flying in and out of kilamanjaro makes sense, except we have to connect 2-3 times...vs leaving from nairobi we connect only 1...although im not sure how to get from arusha to nairobi, the flights are at 8am in the morning, and does anyone know the earliest shuttle to nairobi? Also the way Karen has trip set up, we are doing a traveling circuit rather than flying out of the serengeti to kilamanjaro...any advice on that?

We are really excited about our trip....and we appreciate everyone's helpful advice...

Are you reading this Mzee G? << and lake manyara is better..>> Ho Ho!

Forgive me that maliksan, just a private joke!!

I am sure Karen will look after you. There is no doubt that fly one way/drive the other would save time and give you an easier ride. It may add about $200 pp to the cost. Ask about it.

As to your Intl flights. The main direct flight into TZ comes from Amsterdam so folks connecting from JFK (Delta/NW/KL) find this easy enough. One connection only. No need for 2-3 connections?

Via NBO is the same with perhaps more choice but then you have to get from NBO to Arusha. A useful shuttle will leave NBO at 14.00. I think the morning one will be too tight for you.

Again ask Karen. She is on the ground out there and will know.

NB If coming via Kenya you will need another Visa and a Yellow Fever Certificate. Bear this in mind.

It looks like your plans are coming along nicely but don't take much longer to book as three months will soon pass.

oh my god -Lake Manyara better. You will have a great trip and while I don't necessarily agree with her comments about Tarangire I'm sure your safari will be perfect.

It is probably fair comment for February. Manyara is always good in my book! I only highlighted for KG's benefit!

Hey Everyone! Thanks for the replies back =) We have officially booked our airplane tickets..so no backing out now! Super excited...one last question to everyone...i am debating between the Ndutu wilderness camp (tanzaniawildernesscamps) or the EMC Ndutu (exclusive mobile camps) not sure which one to go with..i know the EMC is a step up, but not sure if its worth it?

We're going in feb 9-18...anyone else traveling to tanzania that time and doing the northern circuit?
