drive time - Ngorongoro Crater Rim to Seronera

please forgive some newbie questions - the roads look so nice and simple and short on the maps in the guidebook...

Going in October... still tinkering with our itinerary. Currently it has us staying leaving Tarangire, seeing Manyara, then spending the night in Karatu.

The next day we leave Karatu, visit the crater, and spend the night at Rhino Lodge.

The following day we head to Serengeti Wilderness Camp which is supposed to be somewhere in the central Serengeti.

This is logical, and does not require any backtracking. My nagging concern is that staying in Karatu makes it unlikely we will be one of the early morning entries into the crater.

So... first question I guess should be, staying in Karatu for the night, what time of day would we be likely to actually enter the crater the next morning?

Question 2. If instead of staying in Karatu, we push on to stay at Rhino Lodge. This gives us both a sunset and a surise on the crater rim. If we get an early start, spend our six hours in the crater, and then head west - what is an approximate time frame for the drive to the central Serengeti?

thanks in advance for your ideas...

If you spend the night in Karatu, you will most likely get into the crater at 6.30am at the earliest. Your driver guide will have you leave very early in the morning so that you are at the entrance gate before they open at 6am. As soon as the gate opens, you will register and start your drive which may take you about half hour under normal circumstances. If it is very foggy which is very common early in the mornings, it may take you even longer.

Usually it will take you about 2 hours to drive from Ngorongoro to central Serengeti. It is about an hour from Ngorongoro to Naabi Hill Gate and another hour or even less to central Serengeti. But remember that, there is few stops for game view which may make the drive longer especially Jan/Feb when the Great Migration is on the southern plains.

If you will be staying at the Serengeti Wilderness Camp by Wild Frontiers, they camp is usually located in Makoma just few minutes drive from Seronera in central Serengeti.

From the lodges at Karatu (Farmhouse is closer 15mts less) it will take you about 1-1 and 1/2 hours to get to the gate for the road to go down. So to have a 6 :00 am start at the crater you would have to leave your lodge at Karatu early.

From the top of the exit road at the Crater to Seronera is about 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 1/2 hours. This depends on your speed as the limit is 50 km per hour but most exceed it.

No problem with newbie questions, idiotsabroad.

You can't get into the first Ngorongoro gate until 06h00 am, so if you leave Karatu at 05h30 to be the first at the gate, you will still need another hour and a half to get to the crater floor, so don't expect to be IN the crater until 07h30 at the earliest, even with a 05h30 am start from Karatu. And make sure your driver knows you want be in the crater early. Some operators only leave after breakfast and get to the crater floor by 10h00 am only.

If you stay at Rhino Lodge, there is a bit of a view but not an actual crater rim view, like some of the other lodges overlooking the crater. The view is over the surrounding forest of the southern slopes. You will also have to pay an additional $50 pp conservation fee, compared to staying in Karatu. Lastly, your game drive in Manyara will have to be cut short so that you can enter Ngorongoro gate before 6pm to get to Rhino Lodge before dark.

BTW, for the best sunsets over the crater you need to be at Sopa lodge on the eastern side (with the added advantage of having their own access road to the crater floor)
