VISA issued at border

Sorry if this has been addressed before but here goes. We are planning a trip to Kenya and Tanzania later this year. I know you can get a VISA before you travel but this requires you sending your passport to the embassy. That creates problems since we are currently living in Mexico so (US citizen). How important is it to have the VISA issued before the trip. Can you have the photos and blank passport pages and application and get admitted. A bit nervous about this since you end up at the mercy of immigration on arrival.

Since you brought it up, see the pinned post at the top of this forum called Visa Requirements. This was pinned since there are so many questions asked about this. However, to answer your question you can get your visa at any border crossing, the people in passport control there are equipped to do this. Just have a new issue US $100 bill available (if you are traveling under a US passport, most other countries are $50) and complete the form available at the border, no photos needed (they will take your picture). It's rather quick and easy, according to how many others are on the plane with you needing visas.
