Bussing from Kampala to Moshi

We are two Canadians hoping to travel from Kampala, Uganda to Moshi, Tanzania. Do we have to acquire Kenyan and Tanzanian visas before hand or can we apply for them on the bus? Also, will the bus wait for us while we apply?

Also been looking around for a good bus company...The popular ones in the posts Scandinavia, Akamba, etc seem to have closed....Hoping to find a route where we do not have to switch busses!

I expect you would be well served to post this on the Uganda forum as well since you will be originating in Uganda. If you haven't already got your Uganda visa, I recommend you get the East Africa visa for multiple entry into Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda - that will take care of the Kenya visa part. You can get your Tanz visa at the border, but watch for some scams. Seems there is some construction going on and they try to move you to different areas to get money from you and it will slow down getting back on the bus. Hopefully by now it will have been cleared up. for Tanz, the cost is $50 US. Make sure they are bills in good shape and marked 2006 or more recent.$50 or $100 bill will be accepted. No photos are required for border entry.

Bus companies will vary and trying to find a reliable one is very iffy, as they change quite often. Take the one at the Bus Station in Kampala which will get you there. You might be able to get one to Mwanza and then from Mwanza to Moshi. Will most likely take you two days, as when you are in Tanzania they do not allow buses to operate after dark.

An alternative might be to take the bus to Nairobi, then another bus to Moshi.

Kampala to Nairobi on "Link" and then change for Tanzania. Allow for a night stop in NBO. then take a Shuttle bus to Moshi at 8 am. or 14.00.

Whilst a $100 EAC visa will work for Uganda and Kenya it would be cheaper to get a Uganda Visa for $50 and then a Kenyan Transit visa for $20 I think.

Either way you will need a TZ visa at Namanga for $50. The shuttle will wait for you.

Via Mwanza would not be as direct. NBO is the way to go.

I hope it will not be too late, there are several buses from Kampala to Dar through Moshi.

www.jipaconnections.com can you have a look on this?
