Recommended campsites on northern circuit

I'm searching for best budget campsites within the northern circuit (wherever allowed and possible).

Please share recommendations on budget campsites (not tented camps or lodges) in the following parks:

Tarangire Park

Serengeti

Ngorongoro (are you able to camp inside the park?)

Lake Manyara

Thanks!!

From our experience a few weeks ago:

Tarangire: We tried two options.

The first was Roika Tented Camp which is an unfenced lodge just outside the Park. However, they allow you the option of cooking and eating in a private enclosure while you stay in a relatively luxurious bamboo-wood "tent". I hear the rates are very attractive.

The second place we stayed in was a small Public Campsite between 5 to 10 km from the entrance. There are a few Public Campsites in Tarangire, this one is the smallest and nearest the Park gate.

Serengeti: We stayed in Central Serengeti. There are about seven PCs located near each other. Our driver chose Nyani Public Campsite. We drove 2-hours west to say hello to the migrating herds. You find Special Campsites (SC) and Lodges in the West (Kirawira - Grumeti area), no PCs. Not sure about other areas of the Serengeti.

Ngorongoro: There is only one PC, called Simba PC, perched on top of the Crater rim in the south western section. Lovely location and views of the Crater and Lake Magadi. But very cold..!!

Manyara: We did not stay inside the Park, but stopped over (pit stop on our way to Lake Natron), at Panorama Tented Camp which operates in the same model as Roika in Tarangire. You stay in relative luxury, but the toilets are shared, and you have the option of cooking your own food which is served in the main restaurant. Built on the edge of the cliff, you get very nice views of sunrise, the Rift Valley and Lake Manyara from up there.

We loved all the lodges and campsites. No problems at all. Clean and well maintained, as well. Part of a larger trip report, you will find some pictures here:

If you are looking at public campsites

Tarangire the best is outside the park near the entrance.

Manyara ditto with more facilities but these I am talking about are actually in the town.

Ngorongoro as mentioned above Simba.

Serenegti 1 at Lobo very nice quiet hopefully.

Seronera a very large public campsite broken into parts with various names. plenty of overcrowded facilities. Pimbi is part of this spread.

The other option for all parks are the special campsites booked sometimes a year in advance and you take in all you need and leave with it as well.

lake Manyara - we slept at Kudo campsite which was wonderful. its in the lodge's territoryand theres hot water in the shower and internet room. the campers can also go to the pool and bar area.. it's realy a good place to stay at.

Ngorongoro - i wouldn't recommand to do a camp there. it's realy cold in the night time.

we had 5 nights of camping safari but at ngorongoro we stayed ay the Rihno lodge which was the least expensive lodge at the area but totally worth it.

Thank you, Jyoti.

Any other campsites you can suggest where you set up a tent (not the semi-permanent tented camps)?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

Are these campsites likely to get nighttime visits by any animals?

Oh yes, there are visitors: in Lobo we had buffalos at the campsite, fighting together. And sometime lions came through. But this is Africa.

Tarangiri: Zion Campground, near the entrance. A private fenced Camping.

Near Lake Manyara is a nice campground on the valley rim: Panorama campground. Breathtaking view to the lake and over the valley.

Ngorongoro: here is only Simba campground. It is cold, sure, but you have your sleeping bag. And when you wish to go into the crater, it's better to sleep there. All other campsite are too far away.

Serengeti: In Seronera are a few campsites, all squeezed together. As we were there, the first three campsites were very crowdy, but the last one, the Tumbili, was absolutely empty. We were the only tent there.

Talking about visitors, we had a daytime visitor in Nyani PC in Serengeti. We reached at 4 PM to drop off our stuff and continue our game drive, and found a Giraffe quietly welcoming us by the mens' loo.

Buffalo visited the Simba PC on the Ngorongoro crater rim and noisily mowed the grass around the tents at night (around 3 AM).

We did not get any nocturnal visitors in the Tarangire and Serengeti PCs. But then, the PCs are not fenced, and you can never tell. The experts may advise that visitors tend to mind their own business. Part of the excitement for human visitors!
