Travel insurance with medical evacuation home if needed

Hi all,

In one week I'll be going to Tanzania for my safari, and while I'm not really concerned about ebola, I've been planning on getting travel insurance anyways, so I wanted to know if anyone could recommend a good and relatively affordable plan that will cover medical evacuation back to the states in the very unlikely chance ebola does become a problem.

I know some plans offer up to $50-500k in medevac, but the fine print seems to be that they will take you to the nearest hospital, which would probably just be Tanzania.

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

I have used Allianz Global Assistance in the past. You are right the evacuation coverage is to the nearest suitable facility. Then home commercially when stable. Fine print below:

Moving you to a Hospital or medical clinic (emergency

medical evacuation)

If you're seriously ill or injured during your trip and our medical

team determines that the local medical facilities are unable to

provide appropriate medical treatment:

 our medical team will consult with the local doctor;

 we'll identify the closest appropriate facility, make

arrangements and pay to transport you to that facility; and

 we'll arrange and pay for a Medical Escort if we determine

one is necessary.

Getting you home after your care (medical repatriation)

If you're seriously ill or injured during your trip, under the care

of a local doctor and unable to continue your trip, medical

repatriation takes place once our medical team determines

that you are medically stable to return home via commercial

transportation carrier, such as a scheduled passenger airline.

We’ll:

 arrange and pay (less any refunds for unused tickets) for

you to be transported via a commercial transportation

carrier in the same class of service that you were booked

for your trip. The transportation will be to one of the

following:

 your primary residence;

 a location of your choice in the United States; or

 a medical facility near your primary residence or city of

your choice in the United States. We’ll take your

request into consideration as long as the medical

facility will accept you as a patient and is approved as

medically appropriate for your continued care by our

medical director.

 arrange and pay for a Medical Escort if our medical team

determines a Medical Escort is necessary.

Take a look at MedjetAssist. I have an 800 number of 1-800-527-7478

The yearly policy is $350, which is what I have. They have a trip policy, but I can't remember the cost. It will cover you to bring you home.

I like www.insuremytrip.com to search for and compare travel insurance.

For our Tanzania safari, we also spent $15 per person for flying doctors, which would send a doctor to come get us and care for us as we were transported to a hospital in Nairobi. We were glad to have the policy and gladder not to have needed it.

For travel anywhere that you have prepaid you should seriously consider trip insurance as anything can happen anywhere for any reason and you don't care if you lose your entire investment. Generally, you're late for a comprehensive policy that covers cancel/interruption.

If purchasing insurance within 3/wks of travel, all you can get is medical/evac. Forget trip cancellation and/or interruption; you're too late to purchase which should have been done at time of initial deposit or full payment. Cost for these are very reasonable... usually less than USD$50/pp.

Check www.insuremytrip.com and call the 800# as their reps are very good/helpful.

Flying Doctors is for in-country only if you should have serious illness/accident (illness, heart attack, broken bone) where they'll come into the bush for transport to hospital in Nairobi; here your other insurance will take over. This is separate from the med/evac mentioned above.

Regarding MedJet mentioned above - if you/family travel regularly anywhere = personal or business - it's a good idea to purchase a Family Plan $350; otherwise, individual trip policies available for less than $100. MedJet has their own web site.

Eric - do you know if the plan can be purchased AFTER travel has already started? For the first time in two years of traveling to TZ (6 trips) I forgot to purchase trip insurance. I've looked into medjet assist this time but not sure if I can buy it now that I am in country for 10 days already.

Hi Kathy, good question. You set the start date so as long as you don't have an illness or injury before your policy date starts then you should be covered. www.medjetassist.com/ericmiller You can buy short term plans or if you are traveling a lot then a 1-5 year plan is probably best. I have 4 kids and travel a lot so I always get the family 5-year plan. Again, there are a lot of choices with this type of medical evacuation policies, but I can't begin to implore people to consider the importance of getting 'all the way home' and not just a coastal city. Let me know if you have anymore questions. NZ is high on my list in the next couple of years! Have a great and safe trip! Eric

Kathy, HA HA HA HA you're in Tanzania not NZ New Zealand! How funny! Well TZ is on my list as well. A friend of mine has built many schools there. And by built I mean he goes personally and builds them. He is a contractor. So enjoy TZ...NZ...and any other Z's! Eric

Medjet is only available for those people residing in the US, Canada, or Mexico. And on the Diamond rate structure (for those older folks) they say that it has to be purchased before any journey begins. Perhaps if you send a message to Medjet they will probably answer this factually, as to whether you can purchase a plan after travel begins.

Excellent point Karl! I made the assumption Kathy was from the US or Canada. I didn't see the exclusion for after beginning travel, but I would definitely contact them directly to see if they will waiver this exclusion. Eric
