Going to Dar Es Salaam from Zanzibar for one day.

I don't like big cities but I figure I should spend a day in Dar Es Salaam. My understanding the ferry ride is about an 1 and 1/2 hour.

I would like to take the Ferry from Zanzibar to Dar Es Salaam and come back to Zanzibar the same day. I would like to know can I buy a return ferry ticket at the same time I buy my ticket to Dar Es Salaam?

Thanks.

Yes,You can Spend a day in Dar.

But The First Ferry Leavves Zanzibar at 07h00,and

the last ferry from Dar is 16h00.

But All Fast Ferry takes 2 hours and not 1.30.

You can buy a return Ticket a Day before.

The main think in Dar is Dar City Tour. But is better to have guided Tour In Dar and Avoind street Boys.

You don't say what you want to do in Dar. There is a lot to do there, but nothing is close together. Some time ago I posted some things to do for a day in Dar, you might want to do a search for that to give you some ideas on what to do there.

I chuckled when you said you didn't like big cities, but I see you are from San Diego. What do you consider big.

To answer your specific questions, you can get a return ticket easily, don't get them from any of the many touts there, they might be counterfeit; get them at the ticket office for the ferry. On the Dar side of the ferry, get away from all the touts which linger around the ferry docks and put them on ignore. The ferry ride is closer to 2 hours and is all according to the tides and wind.

I was thinking about doing a City tour of Dar. Do you recommend any tour groups or guides? I prefer a half day tour so I can have a few hours to myself just exploring Dar.

Any good shops you can recommend to buy some souvenirs/knick knacks.

Your recommendation is to buy the return ticket as soon as I get to Dar. ferry?

I don't like hanging out in big cities when I travel, especially to exotic/different locations like Africa. Since I live in one already, want to experience something different (if that makes sense).

thanks.

Sure that makes sense (I live in the open country and the nearest town has 250 people in it)).

I'm not certain that you will be able to find a tour of the city, I would do that myself by hiring a taxi for a half day (it won't cost as much as you think, my guess $50 - $75) and plan on places to go, e.g., the village museum, for shopping go to the mkonde village close to the village museum (about 75 shops with artists and carvers), perhaps the national museum can be done in an hour or so. A taxi driver will know where all these are located I would then go to the Florida Pub and have lunch (right behind the UN Development building on Samora street, decent light food and cold beer on tap. Then if you wish you might go to the jewelry district if you're into that, it's on Indria Gandhi street between Morogoro Road and Samora street. Almost all the jewelers are honest but you will need to negotiate all prices. You will find probably about 50 jewelry shops, they will all have a guard at the door which will be gated, stand there and they will open the gate for you. You could also walk up and down Samora street and take in some of the shops there, this is the main street of Dar.

Then if you're into casinos you might try your luck at the New Africa hotel casino, just off Samora at the Askari monument and then down to Sokoine Street.

If you want a snack go to Steers on Ohio and Garden and there's a bunch of fast food places there, including ice cream.

These places would take up your 6 or 7 hours that you might have in Dar. Most all of these places except for the mkonde and village museum are in the city center.

Don't worry about getting lost if you're walking around, you can always get a taxi for a couple of bucks to get you back to the ferry dock.

If you want to see something else let me know and I'll try to help you find those places.

The bigness of DAR didn't bug me. Its chaos wore on me though. IMO, avoid DAR if you can.

If you must be in DAR, flying to/from Zanzibar is a lot easier. The ferry scene is chaotic in both DAR and in Stonetown. The ferry ticket office may have restricted hours too. But getting a flight ticket can be a pain too especially if somebody doesn't get it for you ahead of time. First, you have to show up at the ticket office to get the ticket. That office may be at the airport and their office hours aren't that convenient. Then you have to fork over piles of cash. Then you have to make a return trip to the airport when the day/hour arrive to catch the flight.

The ferry will certainly save you a few $$$, but between the lengthier travel time and the time that you'll spend dockside waiting in queue and chaos, I'm not sure if it's worth the bother if you do have spare $$$ for the flight alternative.

DA.. UCLAtraveler wanted to go to Dar and then some information on what to do there. Actually, Dar from someone who is a first timer can be chaos, but most big cities are like that. Actually there's quite a bit to do in Dar and in general the business of Tanzania (both government and private) gets done in Dar. Too bad, but true.
