First Trip to Tanzania, HELP!

My husband and I will be planning a 10 day trip to Tanzania around the end of March to visit his brother while he is in school in Dar es Salaam. As of now nothing has been booked because we do not know where to start. We will be flying in and out of Dar, and between the time we are there we would like to do a safari and go to Zanzibar for a few days. Please, does anyone have any advice?

Welcome to the Forum.

Buy a good Guide Book, such as "Bradt Guide to Tanzania" by Phillip Briggs.

Read it and worko ut what it is you want to see and do.

When ready draw up an itinerary and send it to five or six of the operators listed under Top 10 questions for Tanzania (pn the main forum page).

Go woth what you fee is the best fit. by all means come back on here for advice on your selection.

Hello, Zanzibar is a good idea for a few days.

why don't you go to Mikumi national park, it's a 4 hour drive from Dar,

spend there one or two days.

Above great info from mfuwe.

Of the 10/days how many consecutive will you have for Zanzibar? Safari? Zanzibar deserves minimum 3/nts, then there's the days for safari and as already in the south at DAR, consider the parks down that way - Selous, Ruaha or Mikumi. They do offer flights to/from, so depending on budget you might wish the drive option. Also, depending on how late in Mar and as some properties close when the rains come by April, some might close early.

So read, and contact a few outfitters - advise when, where, # of days, type of accomm and estimated budget. Then return with questions.

You will absolutely love Tanzania, it is a fantastic company. We have done two safaris through Java Safaris (one in Selous and one in the northern circuit. Contact Veronica at veronica @java-safaris.com and ask her to put together some options for you. Great attention to detail.

It's a bit confusing how much of the 10 days you plan on spending in Dar with your husband's brother and how much of it you intend on spending in Zanzibar or on safari. Or are you planning on travelling for all of it and taking your husband's brother with you?

If you plan on only a few days safari, a few days on Zanzibar and the rest in Dar, then you could leave booking until you get there. I agree the southern parks are best- Selous or Ruaha by plane or Mikumi by road. I know that Adventure Camps Tanzania who have 2 camps in Selous and 2 in Ruaha are affiliated with Coastal Aviation, the airline that flies there, and they do offer quite good last minute packages for a few days to Selous or Ruaha. They have an office (Coastal Travels) down at the Slipway- you could pop in there early in your visit and book something. March is low season and camps won't be full (but beware they might close completely in April).

Having said that, Easter is late March next year so if your trip is over Easter you should probably book in advance.
