Berber villages, Ksours and granaries around Tatauoine

We have a full day (plus extra on either side going to and from Tataouine) to visit these. We are NOT into Star Wars so seeing these sites is not a priority. We would also prefer to head for the less touristy sites.

We are on our own without a guide (although we do have transport). I am finding it difficult to get my head round this and get an understanding of what these places are like to visit and how easy it is to explore on your own.

Please could some kind person who has spent time visiting the area give me some pointers as to the best way to tackle this? Where to go and practicalities once there.

Thank you

Are you asking these questions on the Lonely Planet/Thorntree discussion forum for Tunisia?

You'll find that the adventurous independent travellers tend to do their research on there.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that. I've never really considered us as adventurous independent travellers although we do end up in the places other tourists don't go...

Indeed that was going to be my suggestion EESW try Thorntree. When I visited northern Tunisia few years ago got good advice from there.

Yeah. Often though the adventure isn't the ending up in the places that tourists dont' go, it's the how the heck to get out of these places pdq!!

Yes, but we are doing it the easy way. We worked with a specialist travel agent in the UK to tailor make our own itinerary. We have a car and driver at our disposal. I just like to know exactly what to do and how things work before I arrive. As husband says I'd even like to know the colour of the pilot's eyes..

We don't do tourist resorts, shopping or fine wining and dining but like to see a country and try and gain an understanding of what makes it tick (which may not be the right phrase to use...)
