what to do with 10 days before leaving on safari from J'burg

Two women thinking of self driving for 10 days from Johannesburg. are being advised against doing so for safety reasons. We want to be safe but want to explore the beautiful surrounds. Can anyone offer either a recommended route, if we do drive, and/or options of what to do with our time if you believe driving ourselves ill advised? Our safari is a mobile camping Okavango Delta to Vic Falls. We are also wondering if there a a way back to Johannesburg by land as opposed to air? We have some extra time at end as well and thought is would be more fun to see more of the country and less of the airport. I am an avid spontaneous self traveler and I am having great difficulty with the seeming necessity to plan everything and commit to reservations...I appreciate any advice.

Could you please clarify a few points so that we can give you constructive advice?

do you have 10 free days before going off on safari?

and do you arrive in Joburg and leave from Joburg 10 days later, to go to the Okavango?

is this your first trip ever to Africa?

In Africa it's always good to have a plan rather than winging it.

We arrive is Johannesburg and 10 days later leave for safari -also from Johannesburg for the Okovango then up thru Moremi, Savuti, Chobe and Vic Falls. It's the before and after the safari that we are stumped.

you could hop on a flight from Joburg to Cape Town, it's easy and would offer you another view of Africa

.Cape Town and the surrounding areas are stunning!

or if you would rather drive and get a real glimpse of life in rural Africa, look up Madi a Thavha in the Limpopo, Marcelle could organize or suggest a few tours in culturally rich Venda country.

Madi a Thavha is really a very very special place.

Also look up Leshiba for a couple of days of total relaxation.

My first choice would be Venda country while staying at Madi a Thavha.

In 10 days you could fly to Polokwane, rent a car, drive 1 hour to Madi , or drive 5 to 6 hours from Joburg, stay 3 days in Madi, 2 days in Leshiba, fly back from Polokwane, catch a connecting flight to Cape Town in Joburg and explore Cape Town area and wine country for a week before flying back for your safari...

If you can leave your safari in Vic Falls and get back to Kasane you could perhaps hire a "One -way" car and drive to Nata or Gweta and visit the Pans, Baines Baobabs, Kubu Island? then on to Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe? and /or Mokolodi near Gaborone?

Or visit the Tuli Block

This sounds like a great trip - please post a trip report here after your adventure.
