Not much written about binoculars! I just bought a pair of light weight 8x21. Is that a waste of time? What size should I take if those are too small. Thanks!

hi ms jane!

long time no chat.

since you are going to all wilderness + sandibe, each vehicle will have one pair of binoculars. you can bring your own if you want but most of the action will be close. sometimes it is better just to enjoy the ride than fumble around with cameras, binoculars, etc.

It is always good to have a pair of binoculars, especially these small ones that are lightweight and easy to use. Your binoculars of 8x21 have a light factor of 2.6 (21/8) which is enough in bright light as found in Botswana. In a tropical rainforest that will be too low. A 8x magnification is good enough for general wildlife and some bird watching.

We recommend at least 1 pair of binoculars for 2 people...the guide / driver will typically have a pair in the vehicle but you cannot rely on using them (especially when other guests may not have brought binoculars). It also feels a bit uncomfortable to ask for the guides binos when he / she is using them to spot things.

The perfect size, in my opinion, is 8X40...good magnification and allows enough light in...many people like image stabilized binos as your arms can get tired holding binos up for many minutes at a time.
