where to see meerkats on safari

Hi

We, 2 seniors with some minor limitations we can work with, are planning another brief trip to SA and adjacent territory for perhaps 2 safaris, also this time to include Victoria Falls. We would love to include meerkat sightings this time and are looking for suggestions how to include meerkats, preferably in an all inclusive safari of 3-4 nights if other sightings are likely. We went to Sabi Sands and Eastern Cape last time. I will also post this in the SA forum.

Thanks Bob

In the Makagkadi - Planet Baobab, Jacks Camp and San Camp are well known for meerkat sightings, they have an habituated troop near to the Camps. Planet Baobab used to have a special meerkat tour - not sure if they still do, check on their website.

I have had a chance to check Planet Baobab now, and they do still offer Meerkat Tours:

◾Cool Meerkats:

2 Nights - Green Season

◾Meerkat Mania:

2 Nights - Dry Season

◾Lazy Meerkats:

3 Nights - Dry Season

◾Meerkats & Game:

3 Nights - Green Season

I can highly recommend Camp Kalahari- cheaper sister camp to Jack's Camp & San Camp. Visits to this area in Dry season are more an experiential trip, not based on game viewing, but more landscape, cultural & 'little detail' things PLUS meerkats which are awesome! :) I believe Green season bring much wider game viewing due to the wet season migration, still including meerkats also.

Hi Bob,

After some persistence, we had some great experiences with the Meerkats in May of this year at San Camp, in the Makgadikgadi Pans.

You can read our trip report here:

tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g293766-i9284-k…

There is also a review of our time at San Camp which you can access by searching on the camp name.

If you end up visiting this destination, our recommendation would be to ensure you organise and confirm your intent to visit the meerkats with the camp prior. We would also recommend a visit to the Meerkats first thing in the morning, rather than the afternoon.

We are both ' older' people but had a great time with Planet Baobab, Meerkat Mania, trip. Got up close to the Meerkats and spent the night out on the pans. Fantastic experience. You don't need to go on the quad bikes by the way. C

we had an amazing experience with the meerkats at camp kalahari in 2010. we were lucky to be our own group (of 4) so we chose to go back for another visit 2 days later. they are just the cutest. if you sit still, they'll come to you and they'll climb on you, using you to get up high. we also got to see a "turf war" between 2 colonies and it was really fun!
