Visited northern Ethiopia in January 2013 - flew Turkish Airlines which was very successful (good timings, cheap, great flights) - and started off by flying to the far north (Mekele) and doing an organised Danakil Depression 3 night tour (excellent - have reviewed it elsewhere). We used the same company for our entire trip (Ethiopia Tours & Travel, run by Bisrat & Daniel) - at all times quick communication and accurate, informative answers to our many questions. We paid nothing in advance - settled the entire account at stages throughout our trip. From the Danakil we visited Hawzien, then Lalibela (drove as we wanted to see the delightful scenery), flew to Gondar and visited the Simien Mountains, and drove to Bahir Dar and back to Addis Ababa. We had an excellent driver (Mered) and good 4WD vehicle and the whole trip went very smoothly. Ethiopia was a great destination - excellent weather, good hotels, roads and the beginnings of a very worthwhile tourist destination. We hope to return next year to visit the southern half of the country and will use ETT again, and the same driver - we have been told it is more beautiful than the north and want to see for ourselves!
