Ocean Bay Hotel or Karaiba

Looking at both of these hotels for next year and just can't decide. Can anyone advise about the areas in which both of these areas are set e.g. which is set on nicest beach, in close proximity to choice of restaurants etc.. Any info would be much appreciated.

I havent stayed in either of these...but have visited them.

They are both really nice Hotels.

Ocean Bay is in a quieter spot closer to Bakau, although I thought the beach was better here

Kariaba is right by the strip, plenty of restraunts etc.

There are plenty of reviews of these 2 Hotels, I would read those and then make up your mind which would suit you better.

Can't comment on Ocean Bay but we were in the Kairaba in January this year.Lovely hotel, gardens, beach (with towels supplied and plenty of space between the sun-loungers,brilliant breakfast if you go B&B- best we've had.Service excellent. The only thing I would advise,if you can -upgrade your room as you could be by the front of hotel.Just outside the front is enormous choice of restaurants on the Strip, gambian, chinese, indian etc.... for all prices! Live bands at different times.Supermarket on site selling practically anything you might need. The hotel is quite expensive to eat-but we only had lunches there-but good choice. We've previously been to Kotu which again was good-but we booked the Kairaba for next year as soon as we came back!!!recommended definately. We are youngish 50 somethings(bit older than you!) and loved the choice of nightlife!!!! Hope you get more on hotels but I'm sure you will love Gambia

We posted the same question as you regarding these hotels (we hadn't seen yours).

Afer having read Blue07's helpful reply we went to the travel agent's yesterday to book for the Karaiba. It was the fact that the hotel is so near the strip and there's lots of room between the sun beds that swayed us, but we had also read all the other trip advisor reports when we looked at the hotel reports.

They checked Thomas Cook, Cosmos, First Choice and there was only Thomson that had the availability for the week we wanted in January 2009. They all had availability for The Ocean Bay, so we thought that maybe that was a good indication of the popularity of the Karaiba. If you are going at the beginning of the year, maybe you should think about booking now, as we were surprised by the lack of availability.

We also upgraded the room as advised.

We just got back from Ocean Bay and it was excellent, there are some good restaurants nearby and other very good ones a short taxi ride away in Fajara. The best things about the Ocean Bay are, the fabulous beach, lots of lovely sand, and you can swim in the sea when the green flag is up, but even a paddle along the waters edge is fantastic. The hotel has its own beach area, well patrolled by security, so you have it to yourselves. Also, the lack of hassle, there were hardly any bumsters and the few that were there were very friendly. The hotel has lovely well maintained gardens. The pool is sweetwater and delightful to swim in. The food isn't great, but if you are on BB that is OK as the breakfasts are good with lots of choice. Nice beach bar, and lobby bar/pool bar, with two happy hours, one for each bar, so you can have half price cocktails from 5.30 to 7.30. The entertainment in the hotel is OK but a bit samey, with lots of cultural shows. If you are after nightlife then there isn't much other than restaurants. Good luck with your choice.

Hi a sweetwater pool doesn't have harsh chemicals or chlorine in it so its very nice for swimming, and doesn't irritate the skin or eyes.

I think the only difference in these two hotels is the location.

Ocean Bay is in a quieter part with not as many restaurants around but still a good choice.

Depends on what you are looking for.

Ocean Bay is not far from Fajara where there are many good restaurants, where as Kairaba is on the strip and there are many restaurants are on your doorstep.

From Ocean Bay to Kairaba Hotel is about 20 mins in a taxi to give you some idea of distance.

Hope this helps
