getting about

Staying at the Maritim mid June (can't wait!), but a question about travelling around. Is it best to hire a car or use taxis, and how long does it take to get into Grand Baie?

Grand Baie is about 20-25 mins by taxi from the Maritim.

Car hire could make good sense for getting about. The Maritim is rather off the bus route to me and its a fair walk just from the reception of the hotel past the gardens to the exit gate of the hotel.

The alternative is to hire a taxi driver for half a day or the whole day to take you around the island. You can barter a rate.

To add to what Preston said - there are designated taxis at the hotel gates so no need to phone for one.

Car hire is better - taxis here are expensive and hiring a car from a local operator works out much cheaper.

Plus you get to do what you want, when you want, at your own pace.

Driving is on the left as in the UK and with a good map (the pullout one in the Globetrotters Guide to Mauritius is very useful) you can explore the island at your leisure.

It depends how much running around you plan to do. If you only want to go out for one day then a taxi would be worth it. Any more than that I would say hire a car. Many of us use Grand Baie Contract Cars as their service is excellent and they are cheaper than the international firms. Have a look at their website. http://www.gbccar.mu/

Taxis in Mauritius are certainly expensive and I would use for just an odd day but if you want to see the island you can't beat hiring a car for a few days.

We've been using Grand Baie Contract Cars for years and they beat the big multinational companies hands down on price, their fleet and service is excellent.

As Bronia's already said driving is easy, it's on the left as here in UK.

Having a hire car gives great flexibility and convenience particularly if staying a little out of the way which let's face it, a lot of hotels in Mauritius are not in the middle of a town.

Willy, you are beginning to sound like a taxi driver.

Nobody else has mentioned it, but the busses aren't that bad, and kind of interesting. Certainly the cheapest way.

Murugan thanks for reminding us of the buses - we always overlook them but they are a viable option of getting around too.

I've been on a couple a year or so ago and they rattled my bones though :)

There's an Express bus with A/C that goes from Grand Baie to Port Louis that's quite handy - is it number 246 or something? Anyway it has Express on the front.
