Cyclone Amara - Mauritius - first of the season.

It seems the first possible cyclone of the season has been upgraded to Tropical Storm.

The moderate tropical storm which was evolving far to the north-east of Rodrigues has intensified into a moderate tropical storm and was named "AMARA" by the Mauritius Meteorological Services at 17h30 local time. At 16h00, it was centered in latitude 15.6 (fifteen decimal six) degrees south and longitude 73.0 ( seventy-three decimal zero) degrees east. AMARA is moving towards the west-sout-west at about 16 km/h.

Heads up for Christmas week Mauritius...

Yes we've been keeping an eye on it for several days now - see my weather thread post today about Amara being born. :)

Most cyclones keep well clear of the islands and let's hope Amara does too - if she doesnt dissipate first.

Anyone wishing to follow this see these sites:

WIth the Meteo France site click on to cyclone and then carte for the trajectory.

We will keep a close eye on Amara.

If it tracks towards us I'm sure it will all be over by then.

I leave on the 29th.

Thats good to hear, was starting to get worried - do they usally skirt around the island, and then fade within a week ?

Each one is individual - the last one when I was here was Imelda which was an oddity - she had a drunken trajectory and ambled around the Indian Ocean changing direction for over 10 days, then headed for us only to steer towards Rodrigues at the last minute after we were on a class 2 alert.

We havent had a bad hit for a couple of years - they usually pass well out in the ocean and cause us a few days of cloud and odd showers.

If you want to know more about Imelda's inebriated trajectory check my weather thread here:

Glorious day, very hot, followed by a lovely evening - but can't fail to notice as I sit here by the pool that the wind is picking up quite a bit,

NL we had rain on and off from this afternoon and Trou aux Biches had heavy rain and wind as well.

It finally feels a little cooler this evening :)

Really? Well I'm guessing the rain must surely be headed my way then - typical - had a day staying out of the sun today!
