Excursions and cash in Mauritius

We're going to stay at Club Med Pointe Aux Cannoniers next week and wondering what excursions are worth doing. The hotel has recommended Blue Bay and Coco d'Amour Catamaran - are these any good? How much do they cost? Are they worth it?

Also, they recommend taking cash, what is the preferred currency in Mauritius?

Any other tips or recommendations would be gratefully received!!

Preferred currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR) which you can exchange in the airport arrivals:

You get a better exchange rate in Mauritius so dont bother converting in the UK.

By all means book excurisons via the hotel but before you do check the prices and shop around in Grand Baie for similar trips. There are a lot of catamaran and speedboat trips that you can do and its worth negotiating prices as well.

Good advice from Bronia and Preston. Do shop around for catamaran trips. We did our first one direct through our hotel and then found out that it was far cheaper to book with any of the operators in Grand Baie. For a day trip to the northern islands including lunch BBQ plus all drinks you are looking at approximately Rs1200 per person. You may even be able to get that reduced if you book any other excursions with the same operator.

Most places accept credit cards - we only use cash for beach vendors and taxis.
