Bring sterling and change into MURs in the airport arrivals hall. You get a much better rate in Mauritius than buying it in the UK:

www.shibanifinance.com/pages/exchangerate.php

Some places accept euros but its pointless buying them - just get MURs.

You need these for tipping, shopping, taxis etc.

ATMs are widely available and credit cards are widely accepted.

Don't change money in the hotel - they have the worst rate.

Change at Shibani, Thomas Cook or the banks if you need to top up once in resort.
