Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards are the most popular in Mauritius and accepted at many locations. I am sure a hotel do accept Visa cards.

However, many outlets do not accept Amex.

I agree with Dee - which hotel are you staying at?

IME hotels accept only credit cards not debit cards.

The information is usually available on the individual hotel's fact sheet.

See the Shandrani factsheet as an example - scroll down to the bottom of the page - they accept Visa, American Express , Master card and Diners but no mention of debit cards.

You can use debit cards in ATM's to withdraw cash.

We've used our debit cards to draw money but never to pay hotels. Always use credit card for that.
