Road conditions from Kruger NP to Vilanculos / Safety?

In april and may 2014 we plan to travel from Johannesburg/Kruger NP (by 4x4) to Mozambique (hopefully also to Gorongosa NP).

We first head to Kruger park and we want to leave the park in the north and cross the border at Pafuri. From there it must be possible to drive to the coast side in Mozambique (Mapinhane).

Our question is: can anybody inform us about the road conditions from Pafuri to Mapinhane. What we learned from some information in the guides, the map and from internet the road from Pafuri to Mapai is in rather good condition, then we have to cross the river at Mapai (it must be possible in the dry seaseon, and we think we are in the beginning of that seasen) and than the road to Machala is also in rather good condition. But from Machala to the east via Massemane to Mabote looks a litte bit heavier on the map. So we wonder if it is possible to drive that road with your Toyota Hilux4x4. We think it must be possible, but we are not sure. Furtheron from Mabote to Mapinhane the road on the map looks in better condition.

Hi Corry and Henk, you will be fine on this route in any serious 4x4 as long as you miss wet season. That area gets turned on its head with rains. Even the EN1 was cut for a few days in northern Inhambane last week and this wet season has been relatively mild.

Warning! Out of date info. We did this a few years ago in reverse, stopping off for 2 nights in Zinave (lovely). It was very, very bumpy and we lost a big bolt out of our trailer, resulting in us having to spend the night in Mapai. We also lost our electrical connection to the trailer somewhere on the journey.

EN1 to Mabote, the road was fine, but a lot of the rest seemed either rocky or sandy or corrugated. Although, I do remember good sections near Mapai. Then, they reckoned on 9 hours driving, if you weren't towing.

I wish we had rather driven slower and maybe had a night in Banhine, where I think there is camping. Trying to do it all in 1 day with a trailer was rushing it.

Have an ask on the www.4x4community.co.za forum There should be more up to date info there. Of course, one good rain or a bit of roadworks, and the whole situation changes.

I agree with Lamlee, this route should not be taken with all of the recent rains. Much safer to go through Giriyondo border post. This route flooded last year so you will also need to keep an eye out.

In two weeks time we will visit Mozambique. Has anyone recent experience in driving the road from Mapai tot Bahine N.P. and furtheron to Mapinhane and Vilankulos? We would like to visit Mozambique leaving Pafuri gate and drive this route by 4x4 Toyota Hilux. Or can anyone inform us regarding the road conditions? We read that there was a lot of rain but does this still effect the road conditions? And moreover: is this route safe and worthwhile/interesting enough to make the efforts? We like to see the country and will drive back from Bazaruto Archipel along the coast to the south/Maputo and than back to Jo'burg.

Perhaps OzzieinMozzie has recent information?

Hi Henk,

Since my last post the Feb and March rains were quite intense and many roads up around northern Gaza were cut off. The rains have calmed a little in the last two weeks or so but I probably wouldn't risk it, there's a section that goes through a swamp like area that can be very tricky. Safest is to go through Giriyondo.
